This is brutal. Not for the faint of heart.

I am not an authority on books about India. Neither have I read a dozen of them. I was someone missing Shantaram to whom this was recommended. What I expected from Fine Balance was a comical heart rendering look at the Mumbai system of life in the 70's or so. Or maybe I expected a detail on Parsi's and their lives when it started. It is nothing like anything i have ever read, this is not Shantaram. There is no mafia that is needed as per this book since the Government were enough to be mafia ...

Unequivocal and Resplendent

This book contains the most sincere and literary depiction of India, I have read so far. Mistry has done a fine job in blending in the raw underlying emotions of his characters with the readability of the text as opposed to excessive gruesome details(like say Tarun Tejpal's The Story of My Assassins),or only just touching the surface, depriving it of any hostile images and hence painting a slightly inaccurate picture(like say Anita Desai's Village by the Sea). The thing I most like about this...

A must read

Having read "tales from....." I had an idea about the beauty of the author's writing but the novel was way better than his collection of stories. The characters, their relation is so beautifully woven you cant help but go back to 70s and see the emergency era through their eyes. It is a must read for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it.

Stays with you

To say this novel is a good read is to put it mildly. It's the kind of book that stays with you forever. The characters are so well-drawn you feel like you know them early on in the novel. The story is so finely wrought, it is a pure pleasure to read, even if the story itself is gut wrenching.

A most moving book

Mr Mistry tells the story beautifully, his language, humor and plot are perfect. The subject matter is directly from the real lives of the un-privileged.
I learned so much from this book, despite having grown up in India. But my biggest and most unforgettable take away was this:
If the 4 characters in this book can live life optimistically, laugh as they live each day - in the face of unimaginable sorrow, then there is simply no reason why any of us should feel anything but joy and gratitude...

Go for it

This book was successful in transporting me to the time it was talking about. Beautifully written. The characters are so well written, u can't help falling in love with them, the best part is that it doesn't try to give u a false hope.

A Masterpiece

There are books which makes you feel proud about contemporary Indian writing. This is one of them.
Set against the backdrop of National Emergency of ‘70s it tells the story of four people whose life got intertwined because of a house that they had to share in the bustling and crowded city of Mumbai.

Dina Dalal is a middle aged widow whose deteriorating financial condition forces her to rent out a part of her house to Maneck, the college going son of her friend from school. Circumstances also...
