Freedom At Midnight is a historical account of the events that occurred during India’s Independence Movement, leading up to Mahatma Gandhi’s death.

    Summary Of The Book

In Freedom At Midnight, authors Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins provide a thoroughly researched account about various events in Indian history which contributed to its independence and the consequences (positive and negative) which ensued.

Readers will get a glimpse into issues such as the final year of the British raj, the reaction of the Princely states to independence, the partition between Pakistan and India, and the violence that followed. Readers will also learn about the details surrounding Gandhi’s assassination and the motives of Nehru and Jinnah’s decisions.

The book is a testament to Indian history as it contains deeply researched events and even important maps which lend it additional credibility. For instance, the authors have included maps denoting the boundaries between Pakistan and India that were drawn by Radcliffe, who was the Boundary Commission chairman. The authors have also included descriptions about religious unrest between the Muslims and Hindus, leading up to the massive migration by millions who were victimized by bandits and religious extremists.

In order to lend a humanist perspective to their historical account, the authors have recounted specific incidents experienced by individuals during this massive migration, that will surely flabbergast readers. The book concludes with the events that led up to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, including the assassination plan by Nathuram Godse.

Freedom At Midnight was originally published in 1975.

    Magnificent

Simply magnificent! An excellent narrative of the events leading up to India's independence. Books on history are sometimes boring, owing to an attempt on the authors to describe events on a broad scale, and to remain impartial. The result of such efforts is usually a narrative where bland facts and figures rule the roost. Lapierre and Collins do an excellent job of blending the human side of things along with the fact; it is an account of history that evokes genuine emotion.

    Magnificent, Enticing, Accurate, Significant

Greatest book to read on India's independence struggle. It is an interesting read with a lot of details and written in a story like manner. The authors have done a thorough research on the subject. They truly have spent time with Lord Mountbatten to get the facts straight. They even have interviewed the assassinators of the Mahatma. The authors have explored and conquered the facts extremely well and provided readers with this Classic.
Feels good to own this great book!

    Mountbatten hagiography

A very strange book indeed. The authors have positioned Mountbatten as the 'hero' of their narrative and written a gushing, slobbering account of his minor contribution to Indian history. After some time it becomes tiresome to keep being told how wonderful Mountbatten was, how great his charm offensive was, how he got the better of all the Indian leaders except Jinnah, how he "tookmcharge and found a 'solution' to the Indian 'problem' (as if partition was such a hard solution to find, when Ji...

Probably the best read on events of that time

I read this book in 1976 while in school in Xth standard. It hasn't ever left me since then. Today I am buying it for my son who is my age when I read the book. To me its compulsory reading for every educated Indian.Anybody who doesn't read is missing out a lot. It made a deeper impact in 1976 when we didn't have the benefit of films like 'Gandhi' , 'Mountbatten the last Viceroy of India' and 'Jinnah'.

Profound research and vivid reconstruction of the events.

    Must read

This is how History should be told. Our history books in school were so boring, we detested reading them. But this one is a class apart & you are glued to the book till the very end. Though I found the authors to be biased toward Mountbatten & Gandhi. Must read for all to know what transpired during our Independence.
