The Freethinker’s Prayer Book and Some Words to Live By, written by one of India’s great journalists and writers, Khushwant Singh, is a profound book based on world’s best philosophies and teachings of great minds.

    Summary of the Book

Instructions, prayers and practical guidance by prophets, philosophers and poets have been brought together in this eclectic and intensely personal collection by India’s grand old man of letters, Khushwant Singh. It also comprises of his much-loved messages and excerpts from the the influential texts of some of the world’s major faiths. The Bible, the Guru Granth Sahib, the Quran and the Vedas come together to spread the same messages, only in different ways. The songs and poems of spiritualists and saints like Kabir and Rumi and verses of poets like Ghalib, Tagore and Keats are also included in this book. Towards the end of the book, Khushwant Singh has shared some of his own life experiences and those of the rebels and eccentrics that he greatly respected. The book is full of good spirit, humour and as free of gibberish as the man himself was.

    About Khushwant Singh

Khushwant Singh was an Anglo-Indian writer, advocate, politician and journalist. A Padma Vibhushan awardee, Mr. Singh is best remembered for his humour, love of poetry and his vigorous treatment of secularism in his writings, most evident in: The Company of Women, Truth, Love and a Little Malice, With Malice towards One and All, The Mark of Vishnu and Other Stories and Delhi: A Novel. A graduate of Government College, Lahore, St. Stephen's College in Delhi and King's College London, he read for the Bar at the Inner Temple and served as a practising lawyer for nearly fifteen years before entering journalism. He had worked with The Illustrated Weekly, The National Herald and Hindustan Times. A prolific writer, Mr. Singh wrote till the grand old age of 99, releasing his last work The Good, The Bad and The Ridiculous a few months before his passing in March 2014.

iNTRODUCTION WRITE UP: THE FREE THINKERS WRITE UP

Motivated to write after reading the induction write up of
The Free Thinker’s Prayer Book. By Khushwant Singh JI.

Khushwant JI’s theology is mostly close to the heart in the army circles. I keep getting so many mails from army friends as to how one should live their life span. Enjoy; do not be a miser and keep everything to your children, or do not be extravagant and so on……….
Army circle is conservative in their expenditure, no body runs into debts, But whatever they have to spend, they put...

    The Freethinkers Prayer Book

I have ordered this book and I am as yet to receive it. But then Khushwant Singh's books have given me so much of joy, and this I am sure will be the best of the lot. Why? He has become old and tired of life yet the spirit for which he is known remain remains the same-Crisp,unrepentant and derisive. Not all people can have such convictions and maintain them the way Khushwant has done.I am sure this book will be relevant to us all considering the difficult times we live in.

    loved it!

It is not a book that one would read in one go, instead it a kind of book that you read on daily basis. Versus by versus, hymn by hymn and saying by saying collected from all of the world. It's like the book contains all the good from all of the religions. Read it with a open mind and open heart.

    Simply awesome

I have always loved the works of Mr Singh. This is again something a person like me can connect with. His words just come to life; he indeed is/was the best storyteller that India produced. May his soul rest in peace. About Flipkart - No complaints in last 5 years. Thanks ***** ( 5 star) for speedy delivery too.

    Whether to read or not?

"If God created the universe, who created God? If an all-powerful, all-seeing God does exist, why is there injustice and suffering in the world?
Some children are born with severe physical and mental disabilities;God-fearing parents who never harmed anyone in their lives are punished by the loss of their innocent children; the gentlest people suffer terribly while thieves and murderers prosper. I cannot accept a God who is selective in granting his grace."

Khushwant Singh was an agnostic and...

    interesting treats of philosophies

    This is an interesting read.

The name is very apt...The Freethinker`s Prayer Book. It is for the open minded readers who enjoy such philosophies and are open to ponder over thoughts expressed in this book without being judgmental.
