  • Description

'I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...' writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up '1922', the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerising tales from Stephen King, linked by the theme of retribution. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife Arlette proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

In 'Big Driver', a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger is along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face to face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

'Fair Extension', the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Harry Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment.

When her husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It's a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends 'A Good Marriage'.

Like DIFFERENT SEASONS and FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, FULL DARK, NO STARS proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

    About The Author
Stephen King has written some forty books and novellas, including CARRIE, THE STAND and RITA HAYWORTH AND SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (from the collection DIFFERENT SEASONS), BAG OF BONES, ON WRITING and most recently CELL, LISEY'S STORY and DUMA KEY. He wrote several novels under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman, including BLAZE (June 2007). He won America's prestigious National Book Award and was voted Grand Master in the 2007 Edgar Allen Poe awards. He lives with his wife, novelist Tabitha King, in Maine, USA.

    1922-A fantastic story

The first one 1922 is a gem. Stephen king's best works like It ranks along with "Shawshank redemption" and "bag of bones." There are several beautiful lines in this book. One of it is told by the lady cashier who worked at the bank robbed by was robbed by a teenager. When she narrates the incident to the teenagers father years after she says."When I passed him the money, he said thank you. May be he went wrong, but somebody raised him right." To write these beautiful lines a writer should bec...

    masterful

Stephen King is quite simply an astonishing writer. this book is a collection of four short novellas, each meriting publication on its own. the character in these stories are as normal and in effect king has enabled you to empathize with the characters.while they do not match the force of his full length novels, such as duma key, cell, under the dome etc, the stories are excellent and keep you guessing till the end. worth every penny you spend and you can reread them. they are that good.

    Fair Extension

One of the best books by King. The stories in this book revolve around the lives of ordinary people and the situations they encounter which forces them to commit a crime. The stories are realistic, will make u think once u put aside the book.

1922- Story is about a farmer who murders his wife with the aid of his son. One of the highlights of the book

Big Driver - Story about a mystery writer who attends a speech and on her way back home gets raped. She then plots a savage revenge against th...

    It Can't be more.....

Fair Extension is one story which can't be more dark as for the title of the book yet something very real. It's a fiction which gets imprinted in your mind, I often say to myself, "It's a fair extension thing."

1922 is the one which is even darker as nobody can read the emotions of some fictional character as is done in the book. He just brings up a man and suddenly as you read the book you know too much about him you start to think like them. And that's what a fiction is to get people real...

    Big Driver

I loved the story 'Big Driver'. It was so engrossing that it was hard to put down the book once I started reading. First story was very scary though and i could not read it fully.
The last story which comes as an extra was also a good.
Overall this book is totally worth the money.

    Another 'King' of a book!

King's writing style: Amazing as usual, and as expected from the king himself.

Stories: Not to be missed if one is a constant Stephen King reader.
Includes 4 novellas, and an additional previously unpublished short story "Under the weather".

NOTE to readers who may be unaware: The four stories included in this book, are not short stories, but novellas (like in his other books 'Different Seasons' and 'Four Past Midnight').
