Ramanath's father worked for a government department, an honest employee who never ventured on the path of corruption. But, he borrowed heavily to conduct the marriage of his son and is now in debt. The family silently take the jewelry that Jalpa brought with her, and sell it to pay off their debt, telling Jalpa that her jewels were stolen.

Rama is deeply in love with his beautiful wife, and wants to fulfil all her desires, including her inordinate love for jewels. Rama starts taking bribes to buy the jewels that his wife wants. This starts the downwards spiral of his life. He buys jewels on credit and is unable to pay the jewellers. Ultimately, he even steals money from his workplace in a desperate attempt to pay off an urgent debt.
This act of Gaban (embezzlement), however frightens him, and he flees from home, leaving a letter to his wife explaining what has happened. He boards a train to Calcutta and an older man takes takes pity on him, buys his passage to Calcutta, and ultimately takes him to his own home.
Meanwhile, Jalpa is struck by remorse by what her lust for jewels has led her husband to do. She sells all her jewelry and clears all his debts, including the money taken from his office. She then tries desperately to locate him. In Calcutta, Rama is unaware of all this and his fear of the police and suspicious behavior leads to his arrest. He confesses his crimes to the police, who find that there are actually no charges against him. They don’t tell him this and play on his fears to incite him to give false testimonies, against a few people they have arrested for a spate of dacoity in the region.
