Officer Kapil Khanna was a strict enforcer of the law. In order to gain evidence against the local mafia Don DCosta he seek ed favour from his underworld friend Aazam Khan a man with a golden heart. Aazam Khan was successful in securing evidence against DCosta but the mafia got wise to it and before Aazam Khan could reach the law, DCosta with the help of his friend Dalpat Dalal liquidated him. The blame of Aazam Khans death was owned by a petty driver Nathulal for a price paid by Dalpat Dala. Aazam Khans little son Akbar swore vengeance against Police Officer Kapil Khanna as he felt him responsible. Kapil Khannas wife delivered a baby boy in the hospital of DCosta, so did Dalpat Dalals wife to a baby girl. DCosta returned Dalpats favour by interchanging the two on Dalpats insistence. Kapil Khanna was enraged at this and he took to a legal battle against the hospital authorities. The court gave the custody of the little girl to Nathulals wife Banto who worked as a casual labourer in the hospital. Banto named the little girl Lakshmi and groomed her to become an ace pickpocket in time to come. Police Inspector Kapil Khanna is a honest and diligent officer with Bombay Police Force. He lives a middle-class life with his pregnant wife, Devi. When Devi gives birth to a baby boy, Kapil and Devi subsequently find out that the child has been switched with a baby girl, Lakshmi. Kapil suspects that the owner of the hospital, Robert Decosta, had a hand in the childs abduction and launches a law suit against him and the hospital. Devi, unable to bear the loss of her child, has heart failure and passes away. Kapil refuses to look after the baby girl, and the Court asks a woman named Bantho to look after her with Kapil being responsible for monetary care of the child. Now twenty years have passed and the case is still pending in the courts, Kapil is now the Police Commissioner and still continues to be honest and diligent. Then he finds out that his missing son is none other than Om Narayan Juthawala, living with Dalal and Asha Juthawala, who he believes are his parents. Kapil will do anything to meet his son, which includes giving up him his honesty, and if necessary join the forces of evil. Kapil must also deal with Akbar Khan, the son of Adam Khan, who believes that Kapil was responsible for his fathers death.
