4’O Clock / Marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa) are half hardy perennials that reach from 60 cm to 90 cm height, they are usually grown as half hardy annuals in the garden which shares fragrant perfumes to the night garden. It opens at sunset and closes at sunrise. Four o’ Clocks grow rapidly from their small football-shaped dark seeds. Of branching growth, they soon create a small shrub studded with masses of orange-blossom scented flowers that wait until dusk to open. Attract hummingbirds for their last sip of the day and pollinating moths by night–all summer long. If you want to overwinter the tuberous roots, dig them up in autumn and store in a reasonably dry medium, in a cool, dry, frost-free location, such as a garage or basement. Sow seed in moist but well-drained soil and keep warm. Germination should be expected within two weeks, planting out after the last expected frost, placing in a warm sunny position, Mirabilis jalapa is frost-tender, temperatures in winter between 3 and 10°C.This plant has fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in the late afternoon and close by the next morning
