  • Description
This New York Times hardcover bestseller is a remarkable journey through fame, tragedy, self-discovery, and triumph

Getting a Grip chronicles Monica Seles's early success on the tennis circuit where, at age sixteen, she became the youngest winner in French Open history. For three years she dominated the tour, seemingly unstoppable, until a deranged Steffi Graf fan plunged a knife into her back during a match in Hamburg and turned her life upside down. Her injuries healed but the emotional trauma was deep. She spent more than two years in seclusion from the media and the tennis world, trying to fight off the fog of despair until she continued the battle against herself-grueling six-hour workouts were sabotaged by secretive late- night binges-and she was assaulted with criticism about her weight from her trainers and, most brutally, the press.

After an excruciating injury forced her to take time off from tennis in 2003, Seles embarked on her own journey. As she uncovered the painful emotional reasons that had been the trigger for her binge-eating, she finally found the peace and balance she had been searching for. Seles's determination, amazing talent, and touching vulnerability make her story truly inspiring.

A must on the shelves of tennis lovers!

I have always adored Monica Seles, right from the days of her and Graph rivalry. So this book was on my must read list. And it did justice.
It takes you through the journey of making of a tennis player along with the emotions of a growing kid and an adolescent. The fight with fat is portrayed honestly and hence does not look overdone.
I liked Agassi's "Open" better than this, but maybe because he had more number of years and much more incidental journey.

Really good read. Except that it was a little too long in the middle.

The story is inspiring, humbling, and it is written with such candor that you cant help learning a thing or two about yourself from her life.

She is a world beater, world famous, rich, but that doesnt prevent her from being aware of her foibles and shortcomings and wanting to overcome them.

The only small downside was that towards the middle of the book there were more details about every match she played and every trip ...

    Fascinating!

The book was a good read. A truly inspirational story of one of the best tennis players ever. Monica's struggles with her injuries and the coming out of the depression were something really worth reading. It did get a bit monotonous somewhere in the middle with tour itineraries, injuries, back again but the heart that has gone into this autobiography is unparalleled.Like one of the expert reviews said, if you are a Monica Seles fan, this book is likely to make her your permanent favorite!
