Summary Of The Book
Considered to be one among the greatest life-savers of this century, Ben Carson, M.D., is known for his medical miracles. In his book, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, this world famous neurosurgeon takes the reader on his challenging yet inspiring journey from the hardships that he faced as a child while living in Detroit, until the age of 33 when he went on to become Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Though he was born intelligent, his poor background came in the way of gaining an education that he rightfully deserved. It was the support of his mother that gave him the strength to follow his dreams and make them a reality.
The book is filled with the author’s personal excerpts and medical case histories that prove that sheer grit, perseverance and genius is all that is needed to take on challenges that seem impossible at first. It also takes the reader into the numerous operating rooms where Dr. Ben Carson has performed some of the most dangerous and complex surgeries that have been reported in newspapers globally and have gone on to save hundreds of lives.
His story also talks about one of his most famous cases in 1987, when he was presented with the near impossible task of separating a pair of Siamese twins who were joined at the head. The 22-hour surgery was performed after a thorough planning that spanned 5 months. He went on to gain worldwide fame when he performed this surgery successfully.
Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story gives the readers a glimpse into a side of Dr. Carson that is characterized by humility, compassion, sensitivity and a strong faith in God.
In 2009, the book was adapted into a feature film directed by Thomas Carter and has Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kimberly Elise as the lead actors.
