    Description
You are bound by rules, but not I. I am free to choose.'
Two thousand years ago, the poet-sage Valmiki wrote the Ramayana. It is the tale of Ram, the sun-prince of Ayodhya, who is obliged to follow family rules and so makes no choices. And of Ravana, king of Lanka, who does not respect anybody's rules or other people's choices.
Over the centuries, hundreds have retold the tale in different languages, adding new twists and turns. But few have noticed that the tale always depends on the five choices made by Sita.
    What were Sita's five choices?
India's favourite mythologist brings you this charmingly illustrated retelling of the Ramayana that is sure to empower and entertain a new generation readers

A good primer to Ramayana for kids in the age group 6-12

‘The Girl Who Chose’ is a book that Devdutt Pattanaik has written targeting the young audience, essentially in the age group 6-12. The book, as mentioned in the tag line, is a new way of telling the Ramayana. This is a good start for any parent to get her/his kid into reading Ramayana alongside the ever-popular Amar Chitra Katha Series. ‘The Girl Who Chose’ considers the life of Sita and narrates it in five simple chapters indicating five choices she made has various junctures in her life. Rules & Choices

The author has chosen two words! Yes, two words that were chosen very carefully, and which by the very essence of them rule each one of us from inside, mostly unknowingly. They are rules and choices. Where rules are imposed, choices are ours to make. And, how these choices play a vital role in our lives is the theme of this book. Ramayana has numerous characters present in it. The character that Devdutt chose, though is a well-known (and considered to be the heroine of this epic), whether any...

    Amezing

"If you make a choice, accept all the consequences with grace."......I think this line is enough for this book. I chose and I have a great illustration.

What Sita Chose and did not Choose

I will say am not a big fan of Mr. Pattanaik. He picks interesting themes - trans sexuality, gender but even with his previous works, I feel very underwhelmed by his handling of the subjects he takes up. This makes me also wonder if the subject itself is just a catchy title with the lack of any depth being deliberate so as to appease a larger public morality.

So, The Girl who chose, did not leave me underwhelmed. It was barely whelming at all. I understand this book is aimed at a younger rea...

To read or not to read, the choice is yours, choose wisely.

The book is actually for children, and hence has beautiful illustrations and large fonts, but young adults can definitely read it too. The book talks about Ramayana from Sita's point of view, of the five choices she had and what were the choices she made and the consequences that followed. The book also talks about the times when she did not have a choice and obeyed the rules made.

Usually Ramayana is always visualised as Ram Vs Ravana and every other character is just a supporting role, but...

    Must read for children

Pattanaik has explained The Ramayana in a very simple language and narrated the story as it is supposed to be. This is not his interpretation of the story so parents wishing to introduce the story to their young ones - this is your book. This is Sita's Ramayana and the book talks about the five choices she made, in turn teaching its young readers many important lessons.

    Sita'a choices = Ramayanam

The Girl Who Chose explains Ramayana on the basis of five choices Sita made. Sita was not bound by any rules she was free to choose. Sita's five choices eventually makes Ramayana. It's a good start for young ones to know about Ramayana if they have not heard about it earlier.

The book was really interesting with its illustrations which run little over 100 pages. Devdutt have covered most of the important segments from the epic. And, as expected it was very simple and easy to read.

    Even thou...

    Endearing, interesting & intense

After reading the book (more looking and reading) I felt as if this was the closure to the Ramayana which I was waiting for since long. It had answered many of the questions in my mind and made me to believe the tale better. I beg to you to please go and get multiple copies of this book because you’ll want to share it with others too without sacrificing your copy because, as endearing as the book is, believe me when I tell you that you won’t want to part with yours.
