    Description

Gitanjali: Facsimile Of The Original Manuscript is an insight into the mystic beauty of Indian culture.

    Summary Of The Book

Gitanjali: Facsimile Of The Original Manuscript by Rabindranath Tagore, is an assemblage of stirring poems about the beauty and purity of nature. The word ‘gitanjali’ literally means ‘an offering of songs’ and the book remains loyal to its title as it encompasses a string of devotional melodies directed to God and Nature. The book was originally published in Bengali in 1910, but was soon also translated into English in 1912. The Bengali version has a collection of 157 poems, while the English translation has 103 poems.

The poems discuss about how all of humankind can be united through the sacred bond of love and kindness. They encourage humans to leave behind vices like vanity and ambition, and look towards service to others and compassion. The songs resonate a feeling of humility within the poet, who realises his own minuscule stature as compared to the ‘master’ poet, God. He compares himself to a musical instrument with God being the source of the music.

Some of the poems in Gitanjali: Facsimile Of The Original Manuscript are A Moment’s Indulgence, Mind Without Fear, Purity, Innermost One, Seashore, Flute, Lotus, Song Unsung, and Patience. Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for this work, which has now been etched as one of the greatest works of literature.

    About Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was one of India’s foremost literary figures. He has to his name numerous poems, plays, novels, songs and paintings. He is responsible for the introduction of new forms of writing into Bengali literature, thereby making it accessible to the common man.

Some of his other works include Chaturanga, Noukadubi, Ghare Baire, Visarjan, Dak Ghar, Kabuliwala, Chokher Bali and Charulata
Tagore was born in Calcutta into an extremely influential family of zamindars. He began writing poetry at a very young age and released his first set of poems at the age of sixteen, under the pseudonym Bhanusimha. He enrolled at a college in England to become a barrister, but soon abandoned it to study Shakespeare’s works. In 1913, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was granted knighthood by the British Crown in 1915, but he later renounced it as a sign of protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He founded the renowned Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan in 1918. He married Mrinalini Devi in 1883 and they had five children.
