Description

The rich social and cultural heritage of Goa as revealed through the pages of its long and chequered history emphatically shows the emotional congruity of the territory with that of the mainland. The Social History of Goa deals exhaustively on the social and cultural life of a people in the early years of Portuguese conquest and the work has been able to fill appropriately the vacuum felt in the historical series on Goa. The present volume brings up ample evidences to establish the irrefutable

facts of this racial discrimination and forceful acculturation under the Portuguese. It describes the heroic struggle of a people to preserve their identity in the face cff innumerable odds mounted by the Portuguese regime. Incidentally , the book reflects onharmful effects of mixing politics with religion. The Social History of Goa is of great importance as it proves beneficial to research scholars and general readers and to understand the social interaction of the people of 16th century Goa. The book is written in an inimitable style and sustains the interest of the readers throughout.
