  • Description
Douglas Hofstadter's book is concerned directly with the nature of maps" or links between formal systems. However, according to Hofstadter, the formal system that underlies all mental activity transcends the system that supports it. If life can grow out of the formal chemical substrate of the cell, if consciousness can emerge out of a formal system of firing neurons, then so too will computers attain human intelligence. Goedel, Escher, Bach is a wonderful exploration of fascinating ideas at the heart of cognitive science: meaning, reduction, recursion, and much more.

    A Diamond mine of ideas

This is an intensely personal book written By Mr Hofstadter Jr, who could have been a luminary in any field if he had retained interest in it (His father was a Nobel prize winner in Physics). By grace, he channeled his energies in completing this book (which came out of his fascination towards Godelian mathematics) and we have the privilege of reading a first rate intellectual tour de force all for the search for the meaning and working of mind & consciousness. This book is not about Godel, E...

    Just okay

if you're buying it, you know its value. so just about the book: bought at 540/- and as expected its not original. a copy. the "mass market paperback" type thing. so if you're into supreme paper quality, this is not what you want. but if you just care about the content, at this price its a good deal.
