Grand Delusions, by Indrajit Hazra, is a short biography of Kolkata. It is part personal essay, part documentary, and part cultural history, which contains anecdotes and fascinating facts about the city.

    Summary of the Book

Compiled as a part of a series of books on the cities of India, this title offers a distinctive portrayal of the city of joy – Kolkata. It is both intimate and thought-provoking. The book takes us to the eccentric paras (neighbourhoods) and clubs of the north and the south, past buildings disintegrating mutely into spectacular ruins, deep inside Park Streets iconic restaurants and watering holes, through roads clogged by political rallies, to deprived cinema halls haunted by lonely men, and into the lairs of fortune-tellers and tantric love gurus. It conveys the author’s deep knowledge of Kolkata’s history and culture with a unique style and wit, deftly capturing the city’s splendour and disillusionment, ironies and apprehensions. The personal and the political aspects in the narrative style are cleverly blended in this title.

Hazra's Calcutta and Kolkata are very different. There's no pretence or melodrama in his account of the city. The quick trivia and the snippets and snatches from here and there give the book a nice pace. Not a book that you might go back to often apart from the portions you mark during your first read.
A very good gift idea for anyone whos interested in a not-so typical rendition of the city, And the cover design is umm.. well... poetic.
Pretty pleased with Aleph's city series. Hope to see s...

    Worth Passing over!

Well, If you are new to the wonderful and clichéd world of Calcutta generalisations you might want to have a run through, but I wouldn't recommend a thorough read even then. An easy side-step for everyone else. Read the Bombay one in the series though. I thought it was quite insight laden and passionate.

    Very Good

It is like a mini biography of the City from the author's perspective.

The best quote I've come across in this book is, "I am the native who fled, carrying disparate chunks of the city in my knapsack, but who flies back at every opportunity to feed his addiction."
