  • Description

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a classic novel that describes the journey of an orphan named Pip. The delightful cast in the novel along with its extreme themes like affluence and poverty, love and rejection, good and evil promises an evocative read to the literature lovers.

    Summary of the book

The story is set in the first half of the 1800s. With carefully knit comic and tragic twists throughout the novel, it is considered as one of the masterpieces of Charles Dickens. The protagonist Pip is an orphan who is brought up by his intolerant sister and her kind husband Joe. When he is employed by Miss Havisham, Pip meets her niece Estella and falls in love with her. The story eventually makes Pip to change the course of his life. The book is an amusing blend of emotions and is compelling for Dickens’s sheer storytelling cleverness.

    • Charles Dickens (1812-70) was born at Portsmouth on 7 February 1812, the second of eight children. His father, who was a government clerk, was imprisoned for debt and Dickens was sent to work at the age of twelve. His experiences of this period haunted him until the end of his life and inspired much of his fiction, notably the early chapters of David Copperfield. Mastering shorthand, he became reporter of debates in the commons for the Morning Chronicle. He started publishing sketches in various periodicals, which were subsequently republished as Sketches of Boz, Illustrative of Every-Day Life and Every-Day People (1836-37). The Pickwic Papers were published in 1836-37. After a slow start, he earned immense popularity and embarked on a promising future. One of the secrets of his success was the method of cheap serial publication which he used for all his novels. In April 1836, Dickens married the pretty Catherine.

    Book Riview:
Great Expectations. This book needs no introduction. One of the best works of Charles Dickens, this book is about Pip and his life, his thoughts, his imaginations, his likes, his desires.
I had a really good time reading this book. I personally liked the bonding of Joe and Pip a lot. They were more like friends to each other. I guess this bonding is loved by everyone. I completed this book in no time because it was so engaging.

    A masterpiece

As one can expect, Great Expectations is not the kind of book you should pick up if you plan to merely pass the time on a flight. Instead, this is the book you should read if you want to be astounded by the art that is literature.
A coming-of-age tale told in a way only Dickens could. The best part about the way the book has been written is that even though the world might be different and the situations unknown to the reader, you will surely relate to each character in some way and be surpri...

    Perfect product!

Charles Dickens is one of my favourite novelists. So nothing to say more about Great Expectations. The boy hero, Pip seems to me like a next door known boy.
To review about the book I can say the pages of the book are of medium quality. A better introduction should have been given. Language is easy to read. Quite satisfied..Thanks Flipkart.
