Sunflowers prefer 6 to 8 hours of sunlight to grow well. Sunflower seeds are best sown directly in the soil when the soil temperature ranges between 15-20 °C. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep in the soil. In case the soil where you are planting the seeds is slightly sandy, it is better to sow the seeds at least 2 inches deep. Sunflower plant will develop long tap-roots over time, hence it is important that the potting soil is loose and well-draining. Cover the seeds with another layer of loose soil. Once the first seedlings appear, thin them to about 2 feet distance. In case your area also experiences strong winds, some support along the length of the plant is always a good idea.
