The Phoenix Canariensis Canary Island Date Palm is used as a skyline border, roadside landscape, oasis effect, and other landscaping purposes. It grows best in full sun with deep, but infrequent irrigation. It has gray-brown stout trunk covered with old leaf bases in unique diamond shapes. The trunk is topped with a big crown of 45-50 large dark green leaves with 80-100 leaflets in two rows. Arching pinnate, or feather-like, fronds can get up to 18ft long. Lower half of stem are covered with 2-3 inch sharp spines. Be careful while pruning. This date palm tree is drought tolerant and looks best when planted in full sun. Phoenix canariensis is a massive palm tree that can grow up to 50-60 ft tall and 15-20 ft wide. Outdoor/Indoor Use: Both. The Canary Island Date Palm Tree can also grow in a pot. Place the Phoenix Canariensis seeds in a sterile medium which is only barely moist, but never too wet at approximately 1/2 inch deep. The soil you plant the palm tree seed in should almost feel dry to the touch. Nevertheless, don't be tempted to add more water. Cover with plastic film to increase humidity inside . Place it in a warm-to-hot position; say above the hot-water tank. Temperatures of 35 degrees celsius are ideal. Inspect the seeds daily . When a root appears, carefully put the seeds into well-drained compost (e.g. 50/50 standard potting compost and coarse grit), and keep warm until the shoot appears. When the shoot appears place the palm in a warm, light place. If your room temperature is fairly cool, be very careful not to over-water as the roots of some palms (even the humble palm) will rot if the compost is kept wet when the palms are not actively growing.
