Grit, Guts and Gallantry : Officers and Gentlemen of the Indian Army is a book that provides an insight into the Army life. Written by a former colonel of the Indian Army Colonel Mahip Chadha, the book breaks down various myths that people have about Army.

    Summary Of The Book

Grit, Guts and Gallantry : Officers and Gentlemen of the Indian Army is an account of life in the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy as experienced by an Army man. It is an insider’s account as the author/former colonel takes the reader through the journey of entering the NDA and coming out as an Army officer. Colonel Chadha presents an adulterated view of life in the Indian Army for those students who are on a threshold of their careers. He dispels the various myths that are associated with the Defence forces.

It has been seen that most of the Indian citizens are not aware of the Defence forces. They are unaware of the selection process, the hardships a NDA candidate undergoes, and even the rank structures. The patriotism of the Army men is restricted to the Republic Day parade or the slogans of ‘Jai Jawan’. Army comes into existence of a common man during a war or a warlike situation. Also, it has been observed that during the counseling sessions of students at an early age, they are not even given the career option of Defence services. Chadha figures out why the services are not given their proper due in Grit, Guts and Gallantry : Officers and Gentlemen of the Indian Army.
Colonel Chadha uses a conversational style and racy tone to provide all aspects of Army life and make the book more readable and interesting. He talks about the agonizing physical training and the intense hard work one has to undergo at NDA and IMA. The strict adherence to rules and regulations has been disclosed here, but the author has provided an adventurous touch to the book. The book acts as a guide for those who dream of a career in Indian Army and provides tales of sacrifice and bravery with a tint of fun.

As the name suggests, the book is a tribute to the Indian soldiers, who do not care even for their lives when it is about their country. It is a tribute to those people who are willing to sacrifice their lives without any expectation of a reward or recognition. Thus, colonel Chadha pens down a motivational book that is not at all preachy.

    A great book!

This book is one hell of a great book depicting life at two of India's most premier institutions, the NDA and the IMA! Both of them are the best of the best and make all the IIT's, IIM's and AIIMS and all their like look like puny things! It gives us a first-hand experience of his cadet life and his soldier life and what it takes to be a warrior par excellence! If I write more people will probably get an inkling about the book so I had say that you buy it!

    Poignant story_Awesomeness in simple words..

Its been long since I read such an enjoying non-fiction work by an Indian author...
I myself could not give the NDA UPSC exam due to some petty age problems though my only aim in class 12 was to go to the NDA.. But fate played on its own terms and I fell into the same vicious circle of EEEs... :P
So it felt really good to go through some detailed first-hand experience of an Army officer.
Books like these are really rare given the exquisite subtle humour.. :)

Excellent account of the army life

An excellent account of the life in the army and what it takes to get into NDA. I always had a fascination and respect towards the armed forces and the life that they live while on the job and off the job. Colonel Mahip Singh Chadha's simple style of writing combined with a great sense of humour make this one hell of a great book to read. I loved every bit of this work and my respect for the men in armed forces has only multiplied. Highly recommended reading if one wants to take a journey thr...

    A Window

For someone who regarded the Army as the only worthy profession but failed in 2 SSBs (back in 1990) and never got to wear the Olive Green, this book opened a window.

Army is a way of life and every other calling is "making a living". The honour of Command and the Camaraderie no other occupation can provide.

Thanks Colonel Sir, for the book. I'm deeply grateful
