Description

A definite parenting guide from infancy to teenage years, Guide To Child Care contains all the practical details that every parent worries about and needs to know.

Summary Of The Book

Guide To Child Care is an iconic book on pregnancy and child-rearing practices, guiding the parents from infancy to the teenage years of their child. Written by one of India’s foremost pediatricians, this revised handbook contains the latest medical developments in child care as well. The book is a reliable source to evaluate a child’s initial milestones too.

The content of the book is simple and lucid. The book has been divided into five sections. The first part is relevant to the time when a woman is pregnant and when a child is born. It addresses concerns like the right age to conceive a child, preparations before conception, the ideal diet and exercise routine through pregnancy, choosing to give birth at home or a hospital, buying essentials for a newborn, examination of the baby in a hospital, and taking care of a newborn.

The second part talks about the growing years of the child and the author talks about the physiological growth of the child, the differences in behaviour across different age groups, reading to the child, pubertal growth and concerns, and raising up and understanding adolescents.

Common concerns like breastfeeding, rooming-in, general principles of feeding youngsters, and inculcating healthy eating habits as children grow, are addressed in the third section of Guide To Child Care. The fourth section of the book will prove to be extremely helpful to parents while dealing with illnesses and psychological changes their children go through. These include choosing the right doctor for children of all ages, identifying emergency situations, and also dealing with difficult issues like lying, stealing, masturbation, and suicidal feelings.

The last section is about the overall well-being of one’s child. This includes planning vacations together, ensuring the child’s personal hygiene, providing answers to children related to family problems if they arise, motivating the child to cultivate interests and hobbies, and keeping the child safe at home and outside.

The book contains illustrations and a wide variety of information that will put a lot of worries that parents tend to harbour out of sheer anxiety to rest. Each section in the book is followed by guest articles by authority figures in child care. The articles cover topics like homeopathy, ayurveda, congenital heart diseases, and parenting adolescents.

Guide To Child Care has been written keeping the Indian audience in mind. A detailed account of the ideal things to do, starting from conception, throughout one’s pregnancy and while raising the child thereon, makes this book a must read for all those who are expecting a child and those who are contemplating having a child.

A Must Have

Me and my wife have read this book and it has helped us immensely in raising our child. Being first-time parents, there were many issues which we were unaware of and this book opens our eyes to all of them. It tells us that out 100 things that you find worrisome in your child, 95 are normal and you need not stress too much on it. The best part is, it's written from an Indian perspective and hence has great insights to the way a child is raised in an Indian family. We could connect with it on ...
