Dakshin Dinajpur district is a small district in West Bengal both in terms of area and population. However, many rivers and creeks and numerous ancient large lakes have given this district a distinct and characteristic place from other districts. Among the rivers, the Atreyee, Punarbhava and Tangan must fall under the category of large rivers. At one time the largest river in North Bengal was the Trisrota or Teesta which was divided into three distinct streams or tributaries hence its name Trisrota. Many large ancient DIGHIS are scattered in different parts of Dakshin Dinajpur district. No other district of West Bengal can find so many gatherings of DIGHI. In ancient and medieval times kings and sultans considered digging of ponds to be one of the main and great water benefactors. Apart from all these ponds, many more medium and small ponds, ponds, reservoirs etc. have been dug in various villages of the district. Suraj Das has compiled detailed information about these ponds, ponds, reservoirs and rivers after a long survey. He wrote a comprehensive and reliable account of the water resources of the district. There are many legendary stories about the old ponds and DIGHIS. These stories show the antiquity of ponds and DIGHIS. Suraj Das also collected these stories and placed them in his account.
