Tirukkural and its author Tiruvalluvar need no Introduction. Both popular the world over. Prime Minister, Narendra Modiji, quoted Tirukkural from the platform of the United States of America. Tirukkural has a universal appeal and acceptance. It has been translated into various languages of the world. Tirukkural consists of 1330 couplets divided into 133 Chapters. Each Chapter has 10 couplets, called in Tamil language KURAL. Each Kural has just 1 ½ lines only. Many English Translations are now available. This includes primarily that of G U POPE, who came to India and settled down in Tamilnadu, centuries ago. This Author, Prof. N. DORAISWAMY, after going through almost all the books on Tirukkural with English Translations, Explanations and Interpretations, came to the conclusion that the lay man who knows just a little English may not be able to comprehend these English interpretations. The author feels that it is high time that Tirukkural reached every home all over the world. Hence this Book in Easy English. With this, the author hopes to take Tirukkural to the doorsteps of all the people, irrespective of their Educational Qualifications, status, country, colour, caste, creed and faith. There are Tamil people abroad, especially children, who speak Tamil but are not able to read or write Tamil. The author has this particular people in mind when providing the original Tamil Kural in English Alphabet. Hope this book serves its purpose properly.
