History Of The World takes readers right into the major events that have taken place from World War I to 9/11. Well researched and informative, this book comprehensively covers events that changed the course of history..

    Summary Of The Book

History Of The World comprehensively covers historical events that took place from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century. Published in 2009, this book has been written by two renowned Indian historians. They trace back the history of the world, and focus on incidents that have impacted millions of lives.

History Of The World throws light on World War I and II. It showcases why and how these wars took place. Starting off with WW I, this historic account goes all the way upto the terrorist attacks on 11th September 2001. Without being American or European centric, the authors have explained many major watershed events. The Civil Rights Movement in America to put an end to discrimination against African Americans has been meticulously covered. It shows how the non-white population struggled to end racial segregation and fight for their right to vote.

The book also speaks of the numerous nationalist movements that spread across Asia and Africa during the 1950s and 1960s. Anti-imperialist ideas played a major role in bringing about an end to colonization, and freeing many countries. Another interesting topic covered in History Of The World is the birth of the United Nations in 1945. Furthermore, the book also discusses the Cold War between the Soviet Union and United States of America. Arjun Dev and Indira Arjun Dev have developed an interlink between all the events and forces, which helps in understanding the progress of world history.

This book is designed for undergraduate students of history and international relations. However, anyone keen on knowing more about events that have altered the world, should definitely be reading History Of The World.

A compendious read, if you want to revise 20th century history in two days.

Without delving into the unnecessary (but sometimes interesting details), this book presents a well-rounded view of 20th century using WW1, WW2 and Cold War as lynchpins.
At 260 pages, one can easily complete this book in a couple of days.
However, I already had a good deal of knowledge about these wars, hence I cannot judge this book from the perspective of a reader who is new to world history.
I would like to point out a few shortcomings, minute as they are:
-Martin Luther King Jr. and not...

    Good Book

I bought this book, along with Ranjan Chakrabarti's "History of the Modern World: An Outline", to cover the "modern world history" portion of the Civils Mains new GS syllabus. The utter lack of quality Indian books on world history doesn't leave one with much choice, but luckily, this is a fine book. Updated till 2008, it gives in 260 pages a broad comprehensive survey of world history from the First World War to the present. The Devs are well-known historians, and their erudition is reflect...

    Its a factual book

I ordered this book from flipkart sometime ago. Its a good book from the perspective of an IAS aspirant. But if you read history books just fr fun, then this might not be for you. Mostly a factual book, enhaces your knowledge considerably but I prefer a combination of fiction+historical (like A thousand splendid suns)

    good stuff for overall idea

yes the book gives fundamentals of world history touching almost every important aspects of it.yet in some sections it lacks the thorough details and analytic exuberance that we may have in some foreign author books.but to study and grasp all historically important events it is a good one considering the concise representation and volume of the book. a nice work by author to administer huge amount of information in a short, spunky and well paced manner that never drags you to the monumental bo...

Creates clarity in mind regarding the subject

The book is written in a very simple and lucid language. Illustrious maps helps in understanding "Directional" content of the book. The book starts from the Late Nineteenth century, it would have been better if it also covers Industrial revolution and aftermath. No doubt the topic has been touched in some part but would have been better if contained two-three pages on the subject. Overall a good read.
