  • Description
Heart-rending and darkly comic, V.S. Naipaul's A House for Mr Biswas has been hailed as one of the twentieth century's finest novels, a classic that evokes a man's quest for autonomy against the backdrop of postcolonial Trinidad. Mr Biswas has been told since the day of his birth that misfortune will follow him - and so it has. Meaning only to avoid punishment, he causes the death of his father and the dissolution of his family. Wanting simply to flirt with a beautiful woman, he ends up married to her. But in spite of his endless setbacks, Mr Biswas is determined to achieve independence, and so he begins the gruelling struggle to buy a home of his own. Now part of the Picador Collection, a series showcasing the very best of modern literature.

    A modern classic

Really impressed by this modern classic, fourth novel published by VS Naipaul, Indo-Trinidadian Nobel winner, in early 1960s. Basically this novel is auto-biographical and delineation of his father's character and financial travails is very touching.Mr Biswas's life-long pursuit for a house of his own gives an epic touch to the story. The novel is a fine study of Indian migrant society in Caribbean in all its nuances.

A House For Mr. Biswas - A story for you, me and everybody

This story revolves around Mohun Biswas - forever known as Mr. Biswas, even at his childhood - who was born in the "wrong" way in Trinidad, and his lifelong ambition for a house - his own house- that he can call home. The story traces the disturbances in his family before he was even born, the churning in post-colonial Trinidad, his crotchety yet enigmatic parents and uncle and cousins, the somewhat lachrymose and somewhat stern childhood and adolescence, The Tulsis, to whose family he marrie...

    Such a jolt of reality!

A Very good read: its funny, crazy, pathetic and so mixed up and Real! I was disgusted with the characters, then laughed at them and then understood them as real people. I saw myself doing some things like them and admired some things they did and was confused about what I would do( God forbid) if faced with similar dilemmas.Definitely will read all the other books by Naipaul now.

    Masterpiece !

I havent read the other novel's of VS Naipaul
this was my first , i read found it 10 years ago amongst my father's archives..it left a lasting mark in my mind.

the author was able to make feel as if i was hovering above the actual story while it was happening...to me that is the best thing an author can provide to his readers...
