This is an inspiring collection of stories of people who found enterprising ways to help other people.
Summary Of The Book
Helping other people has always been seen as pure acts of charity, going out and volunteering time and money, donating money to charity organizations etc. Or, at the least, the taxes that people pay helps the government devise plans to help people who are disadvantaged in many ways.
But some people came up with some novel ideas to help the disadvantageous others, to create a change in the society, to solve problems. This book contains their stories.
The book is divided into three sections, which are Rainmakers, Changemakers, and Spiritual Capitalists. Each section contains stories of people who are working towards the goal of helping others.
The Rainmakers section contains stories of people who create social enterprises in order to help people. These include Bindeshwar Pathak, the man behind Sulabh International, whose organization works to promote better living conditions, and social and environmental reforms.
The Changemakers section is about people who dare to take action to bring about big changes in society. They take a small step towards effecting big changes. These are stories of people like Anshu Gupta, who started Goonj, an organization that provides clothes to the poor. Goonj uses clothes not just as cover for the body, but uses the resources in other enterprising ways, to motivate cleanliness and sanitary practices, and to motivate kids to go to school.
Spiritual Capitalists section contains stories of people who dedicate their lives to the high purpose of spiritual enlightenment. But, they do not lose sight of the immediate material needs of the people, and take action to mitigate daily challenges faced by the under privileged.
This section contains stories like that of Vinayak Lohani, who after graduating from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), decided to turn to spirituality and help people in need. This took the form of the Parivaar Ashram, a facility that takes care of orphans and other under privileged children, and taking care of all their needs such as housing, food, clothing, education, and all round development.
These are stories of ordinary people, who decided to dedicate their lives to work for the welfare of the society, and found different ways of doing it. They thought differently, and came up with unique solutions to many old challenges. Dhruv Lakra started a courier business, Mirakle Courier. The twist is that he employs only deaf people. As he says, the courier business is ideal for the hearing impaired, as these people are not forced to communicate with the people they deliver the parcels to. All the person has to do is sign a receipt and get the package.
An inspiring book about how some innovative thinking can create opportunities to help overcome many of the problems in the society today.
