Admission to the Indian Engineering Services (IES) is done through the UPSC. It conducts the exam process to select eligible candidates. The exams are conducted in four categories - Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics and Telecommunications. Whatever category the candidate chooses, they have to appear for a total of five papers. The first three are objective papers and the next two are conventional papers. The first paper is General Studies, common to all categories. The remaining four exams are all on the subject chosen.
The syllabus for the engineering subjects is split into topics for two papers. Two objective type papers and two subjective, conventional exams are held on the Paper I and Paper II syllabus for the engineering subject.
