  • Description
A heartbreaking account of a medical miracle: how one woman's cells - taken without her knowledge - have saved countless lives. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a true story of race, class, injustice and exploitation. 'No dead woman has done more for the living . . . A fascinating, harrowing, necessary book.' - Hilary Mantel, Guardian With an introduction Sarah Moss, author of by author of Summerwater. Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. Born a poor black tobacco farmer, her cancer cells - taken without asking her - became a multimillion-dollar industry and one of the most important tools in medicine. Yet Henrietta's family did not learn of her 'immortality' until more than twenty years after her death, with devastating consequences . . . Rebecca Skloot's moving account is the story of the life, and afterlife, of one woman who changed the medical world forever. Balancing the beauty and drama of scientific discovery with dark questions about who owns the stuff our bodies are made of, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is an extraordinary journey in search of the soul and story of a real woman, whose cells live on today in all four corners of the world. Now an HBO film starring Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne.

A Must Read for every Medical Ethics Crusader!!!

This book has really shaken my foundations...Ever since I have read this book my reading preferences have entirely changed...This book was suggested to me during a Workshop by an eminent professor in the field of Ethics..& this book was easily one of the best books I have ever read... I am recommending it to every one I know...& I recommend YOU to read it too... A compelling saga of emotions and ethical rights blatantly abused and forgotten...A MUST READ!!!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The author gives a very clairvoyant picture of the lady behind the scene. I was told to read this book by a student of mine who had already read it. After reading the story of the way science changes due to Henritta's cells I as a doctor was totally impressed with the vastness of scientific wonders. Wonder if she was alive how proud she would have felt, if and only if, she was told that her cells were creating history. Cells used in polio vaccine research, malaria vaccine research, anticance...

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

A very well-researched and informative book. An excellent reading........ I wonder why it has not been widely reviewed and recommended by Indian critics ! It is a very good commentary on social and medical ethics in contemporary world inhabited by human race.

    Not The End

these were the last lines on the novel which is true with respect to Henrietta's cells. A very nicely written and thoroughly researched book by Rebecca as all the emotions and thinking of ppl in such scenario is very finely jotted down by her. Good to read and imagine.

    Immortal indeed...!

As a student of the life sciences, the premise of this book really excited me. It is a great book, and is very well-written. The pace of the story is set at the very beginning when the timeline alternates between the events that transpired in the 1950s-1960s, and the actual interviews conducted by the author.
An extremely poignant narrative and interesting photographs make this book a must-read for everyone.
