  • Description

Packed with anecdote and exuberant detail, In an Antique Land provides magical and intimate insights into Egypt from the Crusades to Operation Desert Storm. It exposes the indistinguishable and intertwining ties that bind together India and Egypt, Hindus and Muslims and Jews. By combining fiction, history, travel writing and anthropology, to create a single seamless work of imagination, Ghosh characteristically makes us rethink the political boundaries that divide the world and the generic boundaries that divide narratives.

Ghosh tried his hand at being a boring historian

After reading The Glass Palace, The Sea of Poppies and Dancing in Cambodia, In an Antique Land is very much a disappointment. There seems to be quite an effort to connect his stay in a village in Egypt in the 1990s with the life of Ben Yiju, a Jewish trader who spent about two decades in Malabar during the twelfth century.
One really struggles to see the point of the book. If it was to tell us the story of the trading connections between Aden and Malabar and the life of Ben Yiju, by the autho...

Wonderful.. read it while I was in Egypt!

I was living in Egypt for a while and picked up this book (I love to do that - read a book about a place while I am there). This book was not a book - it was an experience I lived. I was there and "got" it all. Of course, the way Mr.Amitav Ghosh transports you in time is exemplary. But the larger fun for me with this book was all those little snippets of Egyptian life that he had experienced came alive before me. Indescribable!

    Not so great..

A book which is a hodge-podge of fiction, history, an account of autobiography, religion, anthropology is this book called In an antique land by Amitav Ghosh. The author has done a deep study before writing the book which is very evident in all the chapters of the book. It mainly focuses on the life in the Islamic world mainly Egypt and also the customs over there, the people etc. And also talks about Jews, Hindus, and how many customs are intertwined and also a great deal about the trade bet...

Can not be categorized in any particular genre

Amitav Ghosh, a social anthropologist, became interested in a the mention of a slave in ancient documents from catalog MSH6. He was presumably an Indian slave of a Jewish merchant Abraham Ben Yijû who stayed in Indian port city of Mangalore for about 30 years between 1450 - 1500 AD. Author became interested in the history of middle Eastern Jews and started his research. He did not even know the name of slave.

Amitav stayed in a small Egyptian hamlet of Lataîfa. Here he interacted with local ...
