India after Gandhi: The History of the World’s Largest Democracy, written by Ramachandra Guha, is a compelling account of how India has been growing immensely as a nation despite its issues and diversity. The book especially talks about the contributions of great leaders in building the largest democracy in the world, which is still functioning as the best and the most interesting in the world.

    Summary of the Book

Dr. Guha’s scholarly genius is proved yet again in this authoritative work. Although the country has gone through and is still facing caste, class, religion and caste issues among others, it is still making its progress as the most interesting and the largest democracy in the world. It has not yielded to autocratic rule, nor has it doomed due to heterogeneity and poverty, like many had predicted. The book, while talking about history, also brings out the biographies of some of the extraordinary leaders, including Gandhi, and Nehru. The book also describes the political lives of Sheikh Abdullah, M. G. Ramachandran, Angami Zapu Phizo, and Jayaprakash Narayan among others.

    About Ramachandra Guha

He is also a columnist for Hindustan Times and The Telegraph. He has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award among several other recognitions. Best book about India's modern history

India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. As the name suggests, this book deals with Indian history after 1947 and history assumes the form a of a story in this book. It is not everyday that you want a voluminous history book to never end. I wonder why Indian history post independence is not taught in schools. In my opinion, this book is a must read for anyone wishing to know about India's modern and contemporary hi...

Detailed account of india between 1950-2007

I liked the way Ramachandra Guha has chronicled the development of India right since independence. Its a beautiful narrative and the book is a very detailed account of India since independence. Ramchandra guha is a Nehruvian. He writes equally about Hinduism but as the book proceeds he continues more to give it a bashing like a secularist. The book is very long. Guha has done extensive research in order to write this book. The book is one of the most comprehensive one and traces a history and...

Not for UPSC. But definitely good read for today's youth on the turmoil called Independent India.

As the author himself notes, India is an experiment in democracy. That so since nobody has embarked on such an notion of a nation without a common feeling of nation-state like Europe with so many diversities. But yet we are still together and united. The turmoils and challenges after independence has been described in great detail and it is a wonderful read.

But caution to those, who suggest this book to cover the topic of " Post-Independence consolidation of India" for the UPSC exam. This ...

    Fair

Got it in just Rs.152/- Delivery was late because of huge orders during the big billion days period. Anyway, the delivery was smooth. Now coming to the main issue. The book is good no doubt. It is helpful for knowing our country's past. Also it is much helpful for writing answers in the exam (university exams or upsc). But it is a biased book, the author (I will not use the term 'historian' as there is no objectivity/unbiasness in his writing) shows his personal hate against the BJP & some Hi...

    Fabulous!

Guys I saved this book in my wishlist a few days back, the price was rs. 498 but i bought it for rs. 159 on the first day of big billion days offer, wait for the price drop if you don't want it right away. Anyway i just started reading it, as a book lover I can tell this book is very informative. If you really want to know about our political history, this book is your Bible. However I am not suggesting this book as a Civil Service material. For UPSC you better go with the suggestions of topp...

India as we don't know it!

Read this book for many reasons:

    1. To know how diverse we are!
    2. To comprehend the fact that some things which are taken for granted by relatively younger generation is actually not so straight forward.
    3. To appreciate the efforts that have gone into making India what it is today.
    4. To understand the context of a lot of political events since Independence.

A must read if you remotely like to think before making sweeping statements about politics. This book force you to think and that is...

    Well written...but

About Flipkart, awesome quick packaging and delivery and a great deal.
About the book, it is extremely well documented, which was great. However, the author seems to be in love with the Nehru-Gandhi family and thinks that the sun shone out of every orifice of the family, which sometimes looks like a propaganda machine. Also, it calls all other political and social entities opposed to Congress as communal.
A decent read if you learn to pick out facts only, not the interpretations he provides.

Finally authentic history writing has arrived in India

Since ages, India has been quite bad in recording her history. Most of our ancient history, as we read in books, is not authentic, because it's not based on any recorded history. It's mainly based on fragments from scriptures or other religious books, whose historicity and authenticity can't be vouched for. A good example is the Mahabharata, which is believed to be written by Ganesha, as narrated by Vyasa. No one knows correctly who the original author was or how this was written where as the...
