    Description

India Unbound: From Independence To The Global Information Age is Gurucharan Das's impassioned account of the socio-economic transformation that has taken place in the subcontinent of India, since the time of its independence.

    Summary Of The Book

Today, India is a powerful democracy with a promising market for uninterrupted growth. The financial renaissance is only multiplying in magnitude as foreign investments flood in and the domestic industries continue to flourish. However, all this was not achieved by a handful of people overnight. The nation has witnessed and endured decades of experiments, revolutions, losses and learnings to reach where it is now. In India Unbound: From Independence To The Global Information Age, Gurcharan Das records the very same adventures and discusses the country's probable future in the global market.

The book comprises 3 parts, chronologically structured to cover different phases of the developing economy. These parts are further sectioned into a total of 23 chapters exploring the influences of Capitalism, Socialism, and Privatization on India. The Paper Route, Bazaar Power, Merchants of Marwar, and Modern vs. Western are a few of these intriguing chapters. A few social phenomenon such as the caste system and class struggle are also deliberated along with an adept analysis of licensing rules and other evolving regulations. The author amalgamates his personal experiences in an attempt to explain the contemporary global economy.

India Unbound: From Independence To The Global Information Age scrutinizes various governmental policies like the Garibi Hatao policy, and picks on the incompetent bureaucratic set-up that hindered economic and political progress for a long period. The author also lists prominent figures whose roles and contributions have been pivotal in shaping development. With the prerogative of having been a CEO of a multinational company, Das skillfully writes about industrial strategies, money, and political hold, all of which can be utilized better to revive the wealthy nation that India once was. He puts together such substantial material in the simplest possible text to make the book coherent even to a layman looking to gain insights on India's legacy and future. India Unbound: From Independence To The Global Information Age was published in 2000.

    A good critique

I wanted to rate it 4.5 star, but I am rating it 4, because 5 is reserved for beyond extraordinary books.

I had personal interaction with the author when he came to my university last year. I read many reviews before ordering to the book, which was delivered by Flipkart within 2 days. It is a very well written critique of Indian Economic policy prior to 1991 and major faults even after. It engages you with its many stories of success and red-tapism and many with its positive outlook. It may...

Not perfect history but a strong voice of liberal economic policy. Nice read ! But read it with Ramchandra Guha's India after Gandhi for full effect !!

Not a perfect book by any means, in particular the rail against Socialist policies of Nehru and the single pointed demonizing of the Indian bureaucracy seem a little simplistic and one-sided. Although the author rejected the whole concept of 'Mixed' economy of India after independence as idealistic and wish-fulfilling, his whole-hearted endorsement of economic reforms as the panacea for all perils seems much the same. Also one has to keep in mind that Nehru and his economic policies were as m...

Follies of the past and hopes for the future

In the book Gurcharan Das, former head of P & G and an avid political and economic commentator outlines wonderfully India's economic and political history. It starts with the battle of plassey where British defeated Siraj ud Daulah, the bengal empror then. From there he takes us on a journey right till the IT revolution in India of the late 90's. The book is really enlightening and if one reads it carefully, they will find wonderful insights for the future; about how we can pull our socks up ...
