  • Description

Older, richer and more distinctive than almost any other, India′s culture furnishes all that the historian could wish for in the way of continuity and diversity. The peoples of the Indian subcontinent, while sharing a common history and culture, are not now, and never have been, a single unitary state; the book accommodates Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as other embryonic nation states like the Sikh Punjab, Muslim Kashmir and Assam.

Above all, the colonial era is seen in the overall context of Indian history, and the legacy of the 1947 partition is examined from the standpoint of today, revised for 2010.

    Simply superb !!!

'Ambitious, colorful and fascinating' is what The Times has to say about this book and I can't agree more! Perhaps, I must also add 'balanced' to the list :)

I always felt that history was boring with all the dates and names to remember, but John Keay's, India A History, is more like an extremely interesting story book except that the characters and events are very real!

Also, John Keay's command over the language is just amazing. It might take some time to get used to his sentences which ...

Perfect for the amatuer history reader

Well, this book covers a lot of ground as far as our history goes, starting from harappa culture all the way upto post-independence india, this book gives a comprehensive look at the indian history. Having said that, i was afraid initially, as this is my first attempt at a history novel i thought that it may be too dry for my tastes. But i was pleasently surprised, its not draggy at all, in fact i got hooked onto the book at few sequences such as mauryan empire, gupta empire, mughal world, a...

A must 'ave book on the History of India

An excellent introduction to the complete history of India starting from mythical antiquity to the death of Indira or thereabouts. Wonderfully written and perfectly split into periods so you can visualize the gradual formation of the India we all love and live in today. Keay's language is neither too dull to make you want to call an early night nor too embellished make you miss the historical point. Keay helps present an unbiased perspective 'cause history is as much about what happened as wh...
