Ink: A Brief Overview

It is often said that a pen is mightier than a sword. In fact, the famous movie V for Vendetta immortalized the fact that ideas and thoughts are forever and survive beyond individuals. Ink and a range of writing devices have been assisting individuals in expressing their thoughts and ideas fluently since forever. The first type of ink in recorded history is known as lampblack, which was made from the soot received from fires. By the 26th century BC ancient Egyptians had developed more sophisticated types of coloured agents, that were acquired from plants, minerals, and animals. These agents were used by Egyptians to record their history on papyrus. It is believed that the Chinese developed coloured writing agents a couple of centuries before the Egyptians did. The Chinese were famous for developing the “India Ink” where every ingredient for creating this writing accessory was imported from India. Over the years, the tools for writing developed from brushes to quills to fountain pens and so on. Today, not many people use a fountain pen, but for people who have spent their early school days buying ink bottles and filling up their pens the existence of fountain pens is a hit of nostalgia. However, it should be remembered that this age-old writing substance today is not just limited to fountain pens, today you have marker ink, printer ink and so on. Online shopping sites like Flipkart host a range of these products from brands such as Waterman, Pilot, Parker and so on.

Now, if you are wondering about the purpose of buying a fountain pen or even bottles of ink, here are a few things you can do with these seemingly outdated products:

1. Improve Your Handwriting

It is widely believed that your penmanship is greatly improved if you use a fountain pen. One of the primary reasons being that the nib of a fountain pen is delicate, which is why you are required to be careful, steady and precise with your writing.

2. Make Art

Some water-insoluble types can be used to make different things. You can buy bottles of the water-insoluble variants, and use a dropper to put drops of different colours in the water, once these different colours start spreading in different directions and ways, just slip a piece of paper from the side, so that it is placed under the insoluble ink, pull out the paper after 10 seconds and you will have colourful and decorative paper with marble texture.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Ink:

Here are a few common questions that people have asked about these coloured writing pigments.

Q1. What are the different types of ink?

Ans: There are five basic types of ink, such as:

a. Ballpoint: This is a mixture of coloured pigment and oil-based solvent, which give it a more stable and permanent character. Ballpoint pens are preferred as they prevent blotting and are safe from water damage.

b. Drawing Pen: It is made of water and dye, and the pen is thinner.

c. Fountain Pen: It is again made of water and dye, and the cartridges come with a surfactant to control the flow of fountain pen ink.

d. Rollerball: Similar to ballpoint but uses water-based or gelled ink.

e. Gel: Comes as a mixture of coloured pigment with a thick water-based gel.

Q2. Who invented Ink?

Ans: It was first created by the Egyptians and the Chinese.

Q3. Can I use Octopus ink for writing?

Ans: Cephalopods such as octopuses, squids, cuttlefish and so on are known for releasing a dark pigment when they feel threatened. Cephalopod ink was popularly used for writing in the 19th century. So, yes you can use it for writing.
