Why is there a shipping charge for this item?

Sellers with Flipkart Assured waive off the delivery charge for Orders over Rs 500. For Orders under Rs 500, a nominal delivery charge is added per item.

Sellers without Flipkart Assured may or may not add a delivery charge to your Order. This is subject to Seller discretion.

What is the estimated delivery time?

Sellers generally procure and ship the items within the time specified on the product page. Business days exclude public holidays and Sundays.

Estimated delivery time depends on the following factors:

      • The Seller offering the product
      • Product's availability with the Seller
      • The destination to which you want the order shipped to and the Seller's location

Why does the delivery date not correspond to the delivery timeline of X-Y business days?

It is possible that the Seller or our courier partners observe a holiday between the day you placed your order and the date of delivery, which is based on the timelines shown on the product page. In this case, we add a day to the estimated date. Some courier partners and Sellers do not work on Sundays and this is factored in to the delivery dates.

What do the different tags like 'In Stock', 'Available' mean?

      'In Stock'

Products‘In Stock’ are readily available with seller.

      'Imported'

Sometimes, items have to be sourced by Sellers from outside India. These items are mentioned as 'Imported' on the product page and can take at least 10 days or more to be delivered to you.

      'Back In Stock Soon'

The item is popular and is sold out. You can however 'book' an order for the product and it will be shipped according to the timelines mentioned by the Seller.

      'Temporarily Unavailable'

      'Out of Print'

This product is not available because it is no longer published and has been permanently discontinued.

Why does the estimated delivery time vary for each seller?

Delivery times are influenced by product availability, geographic location of the Seller, your shipping destination and the courier partner's time-to-deliver to your location.

Please enter your default pin code on the product page to know more accurate delivery times on the product page itself.

Seller does not/cannot ship to my area. Why?

Enter your pincode on the product page to know whether the product can be delivered to your location.

If you haven't provided your pincode until the checkout stage, the pincode in your last used shipping address will be used to check for serviceability.

Whether your location can be serviced or not depends on:

      • Whether the Seller actually ships to your location
      • Legal restrictions, if any, in shipping particular products to your location
      • The availability of reliable courier partners in your location

At times Sellers prefer not to ship to certain locations. This is entirely at their discretion.

    Description

Published first in the year 1999, Interpreter Of Maladies is a collection of short stories that revolve around the lives of Indian Americans, and their struggle to blend in with American culture.

    Summary Of The Book

Interpreter of Maladies is a collection of nine short stories that are based on Indian American who are crunched between the culture they live in, and the culture inherited by them. The first story, A Temporary Matter, revolves around the crumbling relationship between an Indian couple, Shukumar and Shobha. Their relationship begins to disintegrate due to the passing away of their baby, which causes a change in Shobha’s personality and makes her aloof. With time, the distance between them increases, and they soon receive a notice about a power cut that would occur for one hour at night daily. Each day, they would spend that time talking about a number of dark secrets, which they never shared before, which got more, and more controversial, indicating the end of their marriage.

The main story of this book, Interpreter of Maladies, is based on Mr. and Mrs. Das, who were NRIs visiting India. They meet Mr. Kapasi, who serves as their tour guide, and has a day job as well, which was that of an interpreter in a doctor’s clinic. Mrs. Das and Mr. Kapasi begin to feel a strong attraction towards each other, and she shares a highly personal secret with him about herself, which could place her marriage in jeopardy.

Another story in this book, Mrs. Sen’s, revolves around an 11 year old Eliot who begins to stay with Mrs. Sen, whose husband is a university professor. She spends her time with Eliot, telling him about her life in Calcutta, and how she terribly missed living there. One day, she drives to the market without her spouse and meets with an accident, after which Eliot stops living with Mrs. Sen.

Interpreters of Maladies has been greatly appreciated by readers worldwide, and fetched Lahiri the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. This book has sold more than 15 million copies across the globe.

    Flawless Prose

Jhumpa Lahiri’s ‘Interpreter of Maladies, stories of Bengal, Boston and beyond’ caught my eye in a book store as the cover page boasted about it being the Pulitzer Winner in 2000. This book is a collection of 9 different stories of Indian people living abroad. Each story portrays a different picture of how these Indians who have been born and brought up in India with orthodox traditions and values, struggle to survive on a land several thousand miles away from their homeland. These stories te...

    Any immigrant's dream

Any immigrant, who loves to read, should pick up this book. A lovely set of stories, on lvies of people who may reside overseas, or visit their homeland.

Especially heart warming is the last story in the set, about a newly married couple and their initial days in a new city in USA. The story plots the initial incidents of the hero, with his old landlord, and how he remembers her later, once he finds himself settled in Boston.

The title story also, has its twists, like many of Jhumpa's other...

    This Book SUCKS pretty bad

All the stories of this books are extremely boring. At some point it'll make you want to kill yourself. All she does throughout the book is lavish description of the food.Stories are silly, I wonder how it managed to win so many awards.Don't get carried away by the name JHUMPA LAHIRI.

If you are a beginner reader, I absolutely forbid you to pick up this book.

If you still want to read an Indian author try Khushwant Singh instead, really good for beginners.

other books that you can try are :-...

    Disappointing, sorry!

Interpreter of Maladies, though a winner of many awards, was a complete waste of time for me. The stories are too lengthy. The plots don’t make any sense and are essay-like with too much description. I found the author ‘beating around the bush’ at many points. Out of nine, I liked only two stories - The Treatment of Bibi Haldar and The Third and Final Continent. I found them sensible and absorbing. I utterly hated reading the story, Interpreter of Maladies, from which the book itself gets its...

    Super!

Anyone familiar with Lahiri will know what to expect from her works, and sure they won't be disappointed. Her last minute ironies, and satires will make one reflect on one's own life; and the society by and large. A tasteful reading for those orange sunsets and a cup of coffee.

    Nice

Bought this as the 2nd book of jhumpa lahiri after reading the lowland. Lowland is a nice book to read and so are these short stories but sometimes i had to stretch as some stories were getting boring. Overall good, nicely written and worth reading.
