About John V. Guttag
John Vogel Guttag is a computer scientist, professor and former Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at MIT. He has received his bachelor’s degree in English from Brown University in the year 1971, and got a Master’s from the same university in Applied Mathematics. He later got a Doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Toronto.

Good reference for edX.
Good reference book for students of edX.
Though, Anyone should not order this if they want to learn python from scratch. Otherwise it's pretty good both for referencing python and object oriented programming. Clears out basics very neatly and of course, being authored by an MIT professor has other advantages.

Seems good for first course in scientific computing
It seems like a good book for a first course in scientific computing. It also introduces
some ideas from computer science. Might be difficult to follow without a teacher.
Plan to use this for a course I am going to teach next semester.
