  • Description

Introduction To Materials Science for Engineers is a systematic and comprehensive guide on engineering materials science.

    Summary Of The Book

Beginning with a short introductory chapter, Introduction To Materials Science For Engineers features the fundamentals of practical engineering and the science of the right selection of the proper materials in the field of engineering.

Introduction To Materials Science For Engineers covers many important aspects of material sciences in 20 detailed chapters. The book divided in four basic sections deals with the fundamentals, the structural materials, the optical, electronic and magnetic materials, and materials used in engineering designs.

The first part of the book covers many topics such as atomic bonding, crystal defects and non-crystalline structure, diffusion, mechanical behaviour, failure analysis and prevention, and kinetics heat treatment.

The next section of the book identifies four types of the main structural materials used. It includes chapters on metals, glass, ceramics, polymers, and composites. The third section discusses the electrical behaviour, electrical classification of materials, optical behaviour, and magnetic and semiconductor materials.

The final section on materials used in engineering design include chapters on environmental degradation and selection of materials. This section focuses on the role of materials in engineering applications. The principles of material sciences and application of those materials in the modern designs of engineering is also discussed.

The writers have included practical and sample problems at the end of each chapter. Many illustrations and questions are also included by the authors. The authors have included seven appendices that are useful for locating the important terms and definitions.

The appendices includes the properties of electronic and magnetic materials, constants and conversion factors, atomic and ionic radii of the elements, and physical and chemical data of the elements. The accompanying CD is helpful to gain better insight on the advanced structural topics.

Published in 2006, Introduction to Materials Science for Engineers is a self-contained course on the science of materials for engineering students.
