It is an excellent book for beginners .Once you have reached the end of java.util I recommend you to buy a book on data structures and algorithms and start solving questions on topcoder and codechef for a final touch.

I had recently completed c language and I learned it from Yashavant Kanetkar's Let us C. Let us c is written by an Indian author so its English is very easy to understand and on the hand, The complete reference is written by and foreign author and it is language is not as fluent to understand as you want it to be. I am not saying that a the foreign writers book is hard to understand but this book is. you have to continuously make an effort to understand the language with the concepts of java....

Books from Herbert Schildt needs no reviews. In fact this book is the universal best seller in Java from 1997. Besides Java, this book can be used for developing normal concepts in programming. There are many loopholes in a general programming language and most of these are clearly and nicely explained in this book. Reading this book also helped me to improve concepts in C/C++. Blindly go for this one.
