    Description

Maurice Naftalin and Philip Wadler’s Java Generics and Collections, published by O’Reilly, is a comprehensive guide that shows you how to master the most important changes made to Java since it was first released. It covers the most basic uses of generics as well as the strangest corner cases. It teaches you everything you need to know about the collections libraries, so you’ll always know how and when to use each collection for a specific given task. The topics covered in this book include: fundamentals of generics - type parameters and generic methods; other new features like: boxing and unboxing, foreach loops, varargs, subtyping and wildcards; evolution not revolution: generic libraries with legacy clients and generic clients with legacy libraries, generics and reflection, design patterns for generics, sets, queues, lists, maps, and their implementations, concurrent programming and thread safety with collections; and performance implications of different collections.

Very helpful in Understanding ONLY Generics

Pros: Very nice examples help us to understand generics and the common mistakes we do in Type casting.
Cons:Covers Collection in brief. i was expecting much detailed explanation as of generics. Generics Vs Collection ratio is 70 / 30.
Not a suitable book for those who wants understanding in Collections.

First thing - it is not for the beginner.

Having said that, we developers use many classes and interfaces from collection APi without fully realizing why some collection is designed so etc. This book covers in detail what is a generic, traps and pitfalls in detail like no other book does.

Each of the major collections and how these internally work are explained to the core again like no other java book does.

I am sure you wont get everything from your first reading, but this one is a treas...

    Type theory for Java nerds

This is an awesome book on Java types. It took only a single read to understand what boxing and unboxing is. Elegant. And you know the authors, pretty cool people. There might be a second edition to this book explaining Java closures and lambdas. But I would recommend this for any Java enthusiast to add it to your collection.
