Jyotish Chandrark was written in year 1646, year 1726 by Pandit Rudradev Joshi. The book is divided into 8 chapters. Five chapters are already published from Naval Kishore Press, Lucknow in 1928, with commentary in Sanskrit, in “Kashika Tika” by Gopal Dutt Sharma. Remaining 3 chapters are not published till date. This book is the 6th chapter having 289 sanskrit shlokas from Jyotish Chandrark, with explanation in Hindi by Prof. J.N Joshi (ex HoD – Sanskrit, Kumaon University, Nainital, Uttarakhand), along with various relevant Sanskrit quotations from books of Dharam Shastras & Puranans. Three main subjects are critically and comparatively expounded here in this book. They are polity (principles of all forms of Government), Pauranik Geography and Indian Astrology with its different aspects.

  • Rudradev Joshi, son of Mahadev Joshi was resident of village name Mala, Dist. Almora Uttarakhand. His forefathers migrated to Varanasi but regularly visited their home in Mala. He and his forefathers were learned scholars of Sanskrit and Indian Astrology and were honored by contemporary kings of Kumaon. Though his place of birth was Mala but place of his creative work was Varanasi. He was taught by his father and Pandit Gangadhar who was a renowned scholar from South India and resident of Kashi. Rudra Dev Joshi first published Jyotish Chandrark in 1726. His second creative work is Jyotish Rudra Pradeep written after 10 years in 1736. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva whose another name is Rudra. He wrote this book in memory of Lord Shiva, therefore the name of the book is Rudra Pradeep
