A Modern Take On Mythology

I don’t read books in order to review them – I read for the sheer pleasure of reading, prose and poetry that’s put together with flair and form, with content that makes you turn page after page, and leaving you with a fulfilling yet empty feeling because you’ve reached the end.

Reading Kamadeva – The God of Desire, by Anuja Chandramouli, actually allowed me the pleasure of doing both.

The book is not a page turner in the exact sense of the phrase – you don’t have a thrilling mystery that...

Fantastic read on one of the most loved characters in Indian Mythology - Kamadeva rocks

Kamadeva, The hindu god of desire is brought into our lives with this excellent novel. I don't think i have ever enjoyed reading a novel in this genre as much as Kamadeva. It was truly a fun read with hilarious dialogues and stunning revelations about some popular characters in Hindu mythology. The style of narration also deserves a special mention as it never lets the reader Stagnate on any particular page.
I applaud the author on her research into kamadeva since the facts she reveals in thi...

A superb read

If Anuja Chandramouli’s earlier book on Arjuna, was like a run through familiar terrain, her latest novel on Kamadeva is an exhilarating ride through the unknown Three Worlds. The pace is like reading a thriller. Obviously extensive research has gone in to this book on one of the lesser known gods in the Puranic pantheon. Using this solid base of research, the Author has creatively added to the story. While Arjuna was a contemporary retelling, the originality of Anuja shines through in this b...

When i started reading this book i expected it to be a lighthearted read... but Anuja's Kama comes slowly into your mind n then captures u completely :) I couldnt even miss a line of the book. Witty Engaging Story of Kamadeva

In her latest book, Anuja has narrated Kamadeva's life with humor, wit and colour. Its interesting to read that a character we usually see as a troublemaker / wallflower / dilletante had a pretty turbulent life, and had to go through a lot to get his own love life in order. Anuja has done her research, and the fables of Kama have been stitched cleverly from different puranas, engaging and informing the reader. The book starts with a bang with the story of Kama's birth, and proceeds at a ...

A brave and successful attempt !

Kamadeva is a very interesting book. All the characters are well etched out. There is subtle humour at many places which I enjoyed. My favourite characters are Maya and Shambara (even though the latter is an antagonist) . I liked Pradyumna’s part more than Kamadeva’s. Anuja’s extensive and mind blowing research work is evident in every chapter and deserves recognition.

Vocabulary is Anuja’s biggest forte in general in all her writings. This book is no different. The language used in Kamadeva...

bold & brilliant

just like narada, kamadeva is also a son of brahma but is never given the same importance anywhere in our scriptures. in fact he is only referred to in the passing as if he were an embarassment to all of us. it takes guts to write a book with him as the protagonist and it was this, coupled with curiosity that drove me to buy this book. i think the author has done a magnificent job in making this a gripping tale. anuja's command over the language helps her in maintaining the pace of the book a...

The Book-Kamadeva,The God of Desire

To the pious reader, the initial pages could be offensive as the celestial beings are shown to indulge in excessive sex. The author summarizes the god of desire in one simple sentence “He exuded a deliciously provoking odour of concentrated sex”. She reveals that even Brahma had a crush on his daughter Sandhya at the risk of eternal damnation. Adultery and debauchery appeared to be nothing new to the Devas. Indra had used Kama and Rathi to stimulate excessive desires in their enemies as i...

Cannot put it down

The build up was breath taking and soon you are so involved with the book, that you just cannot put it down and it becomes like an obsession. In certain scenes, particularly towards the second half, it was as if you are physically present. She writes as she sees it and there is no attempt to dress up the events.
The Author brings out all your emotions and it was a real coaster ride. I rate this book highly
