Lt. Commander Virendra Singh Rawat (Retd) was born in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand on 8th December 1951. He pursued high school from Sainik School Rewa (M.P) from 1962 to 1967. He was commissioned in Indian Navy after graduating from premier defence institute National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Pune in December 1970. He received his basic engineering degree in 1975 from Naval Collage of Engineering, Lonavala. He was further selected for undertaking specialisation as an Aeronautical Engineer in 1977 from Airforce Technical College, Jala Halli, Bangalore. In 1983, he was one of the few selected for Computer Engineer Couse from Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow and thereafter involved in initial computerisation in the Indian Navy till he took premature retirement from Indian Navy in November 1992 and settled in his ancestral farm in Kotdwara, Uttarakhand. Post retirement he has been actively involved in multiple activities mostly on social front., He has been involved in welfare activities of veterans through Garhwal Ex-servicemen league, Kotdwara since 1994. He is also President of Garhwal Sainik Cooperative Society, Ltd which formed in 1965. Lt. Cdr. Virendra Singh Rawat joined Kanvashram Vikas Samiti, a NGO in 1996 and was elected as President of the organisation in 1998. Kanvashram Vikas Samiti is an organisation which was constituted in 1956 by local people of Kotdwara to oversee and manage an ancient heritage site “KANVASHRAM”, birth place of Emperor BHARAT after which our country is named “BHARATVARSH” (Recently declared an "ICONIC" place by Government of India in 2018). He has authored 2 books on the subject in Hindi and English published in 2015 and 2018 respectively, which describes the history of the heritage site. He is credited with bringing to light to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) of relics of ancient monuments unearthed in the Kanvashram region in 2012.
