Niharranjan Gupta created his Kiriti Roy in this milieu and he was accompanied by famous writers like Samaresh Basu, Syed Mustafa Shiraj, Premendra Mitra and Monoj Sen.

He wrote his first detective novel revolving around Kiriti Roy after returning to India. This novel served as Kiriti Roy’s launchpad and was titled Kalo Bhramar.
About Nihar Ranjan Gupta
Dr. Nihar Ranjan Gupta was a celebrated Bengali novelist and a dermatologist. He is best known for his popular fictional detective character Kiriti Roy.
Nihar Ranjan Gupta has also written Kishore Shahitto Somogro, Dui Kiriti, Rater Pakhi, Bisher Teer, Rotibilap, Dui Dozon Kiriti, Char Kiriti, Tin Kiriti, Bosonto Rojoni, Vanumoti, Lalubhulu, Mayamriga, Uttarphalguni, Komalgandhar, Ratrir Yatri, Nishipadma and Neeltara.
Born into a renowned Kabiraj family of Itna in Bangladesh, Nihar Ranjan Gupta attended Gaibandha High School and did his Matriculation from Konnagar High School. He got admitted to Carmichael Medical College after getting his ISc degree from Krishnanagar College. He also worked as a doctor for the army during World War II in places like Egypt, Chittagong and Burma. Thereafter, he did his medical post-graduation in the United Kingdom and joined Calcutta Medical College after his return. His family shifted to Kolkata in 1947, after the Partition of Bengal. He wrote his first novel at the age of eighteen. Forty five of Nihar Ranjan Gupta’s novels have been adapted into popular films in both Bengali and Hindi. These include Mamta, Do Anjane and Meri Surat Teri Ankhen. He was also the editor of Sabuj Sahitya, a magazine for children.
