Serve Them Right:

Bowls are round open-top containers used in many cultures to serve hot and cold food. They are used for serving food and also as mixing bowls. Tableware bowls that are used for drinking soup and eating cereal are small and shallow. Fruit bowls and salad bowls are larger. Tableware are the dishes used for setting a table, serving food and dining. It serves both practical and decorative purposes.

Dishes are made out of different types of material. Generally tableware and cutlery are made out of earthenware, stoneware, faience, bone china and porcelain. Other materials like wood, silver, gold, glass, acrylic and plastic are also used to make tableware.

Though tableware has a functional setting on dining tables, their decorative aspect has been given importance from a long time ago.

Ceramics:

Ceramics are made of fired clay. Ceramic type porcelain, bone china and china are made out of primary clays that form as residual deposits in the soil and remain at the site of formation. Secondary clays that get transported from their original location due to water erosion are used for making earthenware. (majolica, faience, creamware, ironstone, semi-porcelain) and stoneware.

Porcelain is the hardest and whitest ceramic while bone china is the strongest. Stoneware is in-between porcelain and earthenware when it comes to strength and porosity.

Bone china, porcelain, china and stoneware are all non-porous materials while all earthenware is porous. The pores are filled with a glaze that makes ceramics impermeable to liquid absorption.

Since lead is a soft metal, lead-glazed ceramics are subject to marks and tiny scratches from use of sharp objects, like dinner knives.

Serving Bowls:

Soups with a chunky texture are served in soup bowls. The coup soup bowl is rimless and only used in informal dining. The soup-cereal bowl which is also known as the oatmeal bowl is deeper than a soup plate. These bowl sets too are used in informal dining.

The cream soup bowl comes with a saucer. The texture of a cream soup is considered too rich to start a multiple course meal where 2-3 wines are served, so it’s used only in informal meals. The finger bowl is used to rinse the fingertips, one hand at a time.

Mixing Bowls:

Mixing bowls are highly undervalued but they an absolute kitchen essential. They can be used fo4 mixing, serving, marinating, measuring, storing and more,. You need to use the right mixing bowl every time.

Reactive bowls will chemically react with the ingredients placed in the bowl. Acidic foods might react badly and odorize the mixing bowl. Stainless steel bowls usually resist this reaction with acidic food. Using copper mixing bowls for whipping egg whites will assist the egg whites to stiffen and peak. It is usually advised against using glass bowls while whipping egg whites as you will not achieve the right density. Plastic bowls are easy to use but you cannot have hot dishes in them. There is no dearth for availability of Kitchen and Household items. You can choose according to your preferences and everyday usage.
