Though I hardly read the newspaper cover to cover, I never used to miss the Know Your English section in the Open Page on Tuesdays. It was a great revelation knowing the origin of each idiom or word, and the way it was explained and the help offered on the pronunciation were simple enough to be misunderstood.

About the book, it is of great convenience that it has been published as a book. One thing to be noted is that the content listing as well as the content stop at P and there are no ent...

I was actually in two minds about buying this because I feel that I'm pretty good in English. And as suspected I knew the meaning of most (80%) of the idioms mentioned here.

But to my pleasant surprise, I did not know the origins of these phrases and Mr.Upendran has highlighted that well in this book.

I also bought his other book, yet to pore through that.

This book is one of the best books on 'idioms'. It covers good no. of idioms that one often comes across, and they are explained in lucid manner. Eagerly waiting for another two volumes in this series.

I have been reading KYE since 2001 and my vocabulary has improved cosiderably. I have gained confidence in written English to much extent and still learning every day and specially every week(by KYE column)..

I would encourage school students to read KYE column to improve their English language.. It really hepls a lot!! You cannot learn English in such a easy way other than this... (Of course, grammar part has to be studied separately) ...

I am regular reader of know your English colomn in the Hindu daily for many years.Thiru.upendran's work is superb and commendable.This series of book is treasure for English lovers.I do wish every language lover to have these series in their home library for their heirs.

Excellent book. Useful for serious and non-serious readers. Gives a good understanding of the idioms. The stories behind these idioms are informative and a treat to read.

I understand from the publisher that the book is expected in April 2012. Eagerly waiting for Vol. 2.

Hats of to Dr Upendran, the author for such a meticulous work. I am a fan of his column in The Hindu newspaper.
