  • Description
Surpanakha, Ravan's infamous sister-ugly and untamed, brutal and brazen. This is how she is commonly perceived. One whose nose was sliced off by an angry Lakshman and the one who started a war but was she really just perpetrator of war? Or was she a victim? Was she Lanka's princess? Or was she the reason for its destruction?

Surpanakha, meaning the woman as hard as nails was born as Meenakshi-the one with beautiful, fish-shaped eyes. Growing up in the shadows of her brothers, who were destined to win wars, fame and prestige, she, instead, charts up a path filled with misery and revenge.

Accused of manipulating events between Ram and Ravan, which culminated in a bloody war and annihilation of her family, Surpanakha is often the most misunderstood character in the Ramayana. Kavita Kane's Lanka's Princess tells the story from the vantage of this woman more hated than hateful...

    “Lanka’s Princess” - Kavita Kane

We all have heard, read and seen the story of Ram, the great warrior Prince of Ayodhya. Some from Ram’s point of view, some from Sita’s and a few from Ravan’s or Hanuman’s perspective. Each version represented its protagonist in a different way. All of them lead to the depiction of the final battle between the good and evil, but none really sheds light towards why the evil became evil and why was the good drawn towards going for a battle.

    Lanka’s princess, S...

    Surphanakha in a new light.

The story of Surphanakha, Ravana's sister is one of jealousy, greed and vanity. But in this version by Kavita Kane you understand her motives and maybe sometimes even identify with her. While it isn't as gripping a tale as Kavita Kane's earlier works like "Karna's wife" and "Sita's Sister", it is still a great read which sheds some light on one of the most hated and judged characters in Hindu mythology.

A well researched and beautifully penned book which you just

Ramayana is one epic we have all grown up on. While the story reinforced in our minds revolves around the Ayodhya princes, their wives, the war and of course, the mighty Ravan, we fail to notice one character without whom, perhaps the story would have been different. That character is Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana and the root cause behind the war between Ram and Ravan.

The story underscores the fact that an evil mind is not born. Sometimes, circumstances cruelly bring the worst out of a ...

I loved the book. It has so much insight that you start feeling kind for the negative character of Ramayana! Applause for Kavita for her book "Lanka's Princess".

    Ravan’s infamous sister

We all heard the story of Ramayana; Ram; Laxman; Sita; Ravan. How Ravan abducted Sita while she was with her husband Ram and his younger brother Laxman wandering in forest for fourteen years of exile. How Ravan fooled Sita by his Sage look and abducted to take revenge from Ram for disgracing his sister Surpanakha by blazing her nose.

But, the question is who Surpanakha is. Is the only identity of her; she is sister of Ravana and daughter of Taraka and Vishravas or is there something more to ...
