  • Description
Victor Hugo's tale of injustice, heroism and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him. But his attempts to become a respected member of the community are constantly put under threat: by his own conscience, when, owing to a case of mistaken identity, another man is arrested in his place; and by the relentless investigations of the dogged Inspector Javert. It is not simply for himself that Valjean must stay free, however, for he has sworn to protect the baby daughter of Fantine, driven to prostitution by poverty. Norman Denny's lively English translation is accompanied by an introduction discussing Hugo's political and artistic aims in writing Les Misérables. Victor Hugo (1802-85) wrote volumes of criticism, dramas, satirical verse and political journalism but is best remembered for his novels, especially Notre-Dame de Paris (also known as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) and Les Misérables, which was adapted into one of the most successful musicals of all time. 'All human life is here' Cameron Mackintosh, producer of the musical Les Misérables 'One of the half-dozen greatest novels of the world' Upton Sinclair 'A great writer - inventive, witty, sly, innovatory' A. S. Byatt, author of Possession

    abridged version

The description of the book does not mention that this is the abridged edition of the book. The abridgement is taken from The Penguin Audiobook. Information about editions need to be part of the book description on the website. It might be important for some people to know which edition they are buying.

    Epic

I have read many books but frankly this one is one of those very few books that was indeed a page turner. The protagonist Valjean is a hero of a very likely and an unlikely kind. The book is a monster with more than 1200 pages but its all worth it. There are a few characters in this Novel which probably you would remember for life. Victor Hugo has given this world a Masterpeace and i would pity all those souls who didnt get an opportunity to relish it.

    French Classic story

This book is the most brief and shortest version of the original classic, which consists of five volumes, each volume has around 8 to 15 books. Very easy to understand language, and good, if you are looking to gift it to little kids.

    An Epic

This is a book which contains immense drama. If anyone wants to get treat of emotions alongwith the dose of portrayal of battle of waterloo, then he or she should go for it. The relation between Jean Valjean and Cossette is only one of its kind. Go for it.

A microcosm of 19th century france.

There need be no further discourses on Victor Hugo's Les Misérables. It is already accepted as a classic in western literature. Albeit, though the length of the book is quite long, the soul of the book appeals to all readers with its discussion about poverty, righteousness and the impact of society on individuals. A patient and enthusiastic reader will be rewarded.

Greatest book in western literature ever written

If someone says that he is a literature student and haven't read this, God bless him. This is the most enjoyable, heart touching, significant and philosophical work of western literature: the story of a convict and his long redemption.Everyone should give it a try in spite of its length.
