The scientific name for portulaca, commonly known as moss rose or purslane, is Portulaca grandiflora for the ornamental garden variety and Portulaca oleracea for the common edible and sometimes invasive purslane. Both are in the Portulacaceae family and are valued for their colourful, fast-blooming flowers and succulent foliage, with P. grandiflora being the one primarily cultivated for its ornamental value in gardens.

Portulaca flower seeds are primarily used to grow a low-maintenance, vibrantly colored, ground-hugging plant known as the sun rose or moss rose, which thrives in sunny, well-draining soil and is suitable for containers, garden beds, and borders. While Portulaca grandiflora varieties are grown for their ornamental value, some species, particularly Portulaca oleracea, also possess various folk medicinal uses as a febrifuge, antiseptic, and for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties.

Portulaca flowers require well-draining, lean, sandy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5-7.0) and prefer not to be over-fertilized, as this can lead to less blooming. At planting, a balanced slow-release fertilizer or organic matter like compost or manure can be added to promote growth, with a focus on phosphorus to encourage blooms.

To sow portulaca seeds, prepare well-draining, sandy soil in a sunny spot, then lightly sprinkle the seeds on the surface and cover them with a very thin layer of soil. Water gently to moisten the soil, ensuring it remains slightly moist during the 7-14 day germination period. Once seedlings develop, they need full sun to thrive and can be planted in beds or containers, with 30 cm spacing for best results.

Plant of portulaca flower requires full sunlight. Therefore they should be kept in shiny sun. Give water to your ripe portulaca flower plant every day in the summer, while giving water to the plant, make sure that the water is to be placed above the plant in the form of a shower and not as a sharp edge. Before planting seeds, add organic manure of good quality to soil with a ratio of 2: 1. Organic manure can be well-manipulated dung manure, farm manure, or vermicompost. Flowering will start after about 35-50 days of sowing.
