The Lord implies this in His blessed word of promise to the seeker--To him that hath, shall more be given. I think we have a right to take these two words as a command and promise intertwined, and to accept them as such. First, We may take them as an encouragement to faith. Second, As an incentive to obedience. A humble, waiting, seeking, longing heart is the heart that the Lord loves and blesses. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. He wants us to come with empty hands to Him, that we may indeed receive, and in receiving be fully satisfied. He filleth the hungry with good things. The Lord would have us filled with the Spirit (Eph. v. 18). Filled with righteousness (Matt. v. 6). Filled with all the fulness of GOD (Eph. iii. 19). So let us believe and receive. Many of us in looking back over the past year have a feeling of sadness in thinking of neglected OT-portunities, failings in duty, words hastily spoken, acts thoughtlessly committed (which have none the less left behind them their dark stain, and have power even now to trouble our consciences), past pleasures, perhaps sore bereavements. On the other hand, many of us can look back to a year of very great happiness, spiritual and temporal delights, fresh views of the Lord's tenderest love, more knowledge of his precious Word, more value for His unspeakable gift, brighter sunbeams, fewer clouds; many of you, dear friends, can rejoice that you have been called during the past year out of darkness into His marvellous light.
