  • Description

We the Living is the debut novel by Ayn Rand. This work of nonfiction was Rand’s first statement against communism.

    Summary of the Book

This title depicts the story of life in post-revolutionary Russia. Kira Argounova, the younger daughter of a bourgeois family, is the protagonist of the story. It is her battle against the land, as an aftermath of the ever-lasting effect of the Russian Revolution, along with two other individuals who ask for the right to live according to their own terms, and follow their own sources of pleasure. We the Living expresses a deep concern for the people who encounter horrors just for survival in a totalitarian state. It was also adapted into a two-fold movie, Noi Vivi and Addio, Kira in the year 1942.

    About Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand was a Russian-American writer, novelist, and philosopher who first came up with the philosophical system called Objectivism. She was born in Russia in 1905. She admitted to have started penning screenplays since she was eight years old, as she lacked any interest in going to school. She also started writing novels when she was only ten. When Rand was in high school, she became a self-proclaimed atheist and asserted that she believed in the significance of reason more than anything else. After high school, she came back to Saint Petersburg, her birth place, and joined the Petrograd State University. She studied social pedagogy and history there. Ayn also studied at the State Technicum for Screen Arts in Leningrad for a year, after which she evolved her philosophy, Objectivism. She did so not only through her non-fiction writing, but also by giving lectures at several universities like Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and MIT. She received an honorary doctorate from the Lewis & Clark College in 1963. Rand passed away due to heart failure in 1982 in New York City. Some of her other works are The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, Night of January 16th, and The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolution.

About us...who live across all societies!

When I started We the Living,I did not expect Ayn Rand to surpass her previously written Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged but I am spellbound by the quality of understanding of human beings that she has achieved. She calls it an autobiography in the closest sense of the term as Kira's ideals, dreams and characteristics were hers but their experiences have differed on various grounds.
We the Living is essentially the story of a wondrous, intelligent and ambitious girl who sees the world not fro...

    Nice read

With this I have completed the Ayn Rand tri series- FountainHead, Atlas Shrugged and We the Living.

Though its a must to read We the Living if you are an Ayn Rand fan. but it does not surpass her previous works that I have read.

I have started purchasing books from Flipkart, as they are found to be in best condition. With quality pages and robust paper back. This book was no different from my earlier experiences through flipkart.

    Fabulous!

One of Ayn Rand's best work with amazing setting, highly motivated characters that paints a perfect picture of Russia and Eastern Europe during the 70s. A must read.

Book quality is poor. But book content is worth reading.

Very poor quality paper and cover. Not durable nor worth giving as present to anyone.

But the book by itself is worth reading, as its very educative by giving us a glimpse of Russia in those tough times.

    Just wow!

The best story by ayn rand. Many times my eyes became so wet. Heart pinching and so tragic story. Based on my perception this is the best novel of her though I finished atlas shrugged and the fountainhead. Must read to learn how the society impacts your life when it's beneath incompetents hands. Buy it blindly don't waste time for thinking.

Excellent book but terrible paper quality.

I've ordered Signet Editions of both The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged from Flipkart. The books are very good and the cover and paper quality is excellent.
However the paper (and cover) quality of We the Living is terrible. I'm particularly speaking about the We the Living (75th Anniversary Edition) (English) (Paperback) version published by Penguin Publishing Group. To give you an example, my version of The Fountainhead has 720 pages and is 4.2 cms thick. We the Living, with 528 pages is o...
