A 'must read' for every Indian

Guha’s style of writing is easy to follow and I am reminded of “The Raj” by Lawrence James. The sheer extent of his research cannot but impress everyone who reads the book. He is consistent in his views and deals with personalities of people who are considered demi-gods in India and even controversial subjects like communalism in an even handed manner without sounding too opinionated or biased. Like many works of this size, there are bound to be instances where research fails him or where he...

An eyeopener of a book

A superbly edited and compiled book - the clarity of thought of these great men of India in transition is astounding. My favourite is Ambedkar and Hamid Dalvai. Rajagopalachari is a surprise - I had not known of his free market views. A must read for those wish to understand this complex country.

A quick walk into the minds of great thinkers!!

Well the title is mis-leading with many "makers" which Mr Guha mentioned in the book didn't have significant impact on the society. It wold be better titled with "Thinkers of modern India"
However, the book is a marvellous compilation of some of the greatest thinkers ranging from 18th century to present day.One will be amazed while sneaking into the minds of 18th century thinkers and writers with their clarity of thoughts and broad view.
Tarabai Shinde,Hamid Dalwai, EV Swamy and other less popu...

Typical Guha !

An amazing introduction to modern Indian political thought through the words of the thinkers themselves. The opening and final essays are beautifully written emphasizing the profundity of Guha's thoughts expressed in simple prose. /

My favorite parts were Ambedkar's speeches in the constituent assembly and MK Gandhi's explanation for Non-violence as a strategy in struggle.

Super!

I did not expect that this book will only be a collection of writings penned by the makers of modern India with a very short introduction to each maker. But this aspect gives the book it's charm, it gives you the chance to read the work of great reformist.

Why not omit

I have read the book "The Makers Of Modern India"and have found it useful for refernces. but going through the review of the book at Flipkart.com,I am quiet appalled at some comments. The comments are made by some people regarding the non inclusion of the names of personalities like Ishwarchandra Vidyaasaagar and Swaami Vivekaanand.
My feeling is that the Reviewers are suffering from a false conceit arising from the false notion of thinking the Bengalis to be "The Most Artistic, Intellectual,...

Worth Reading to Understand the Present.

This provides an insight into the life and works of Indians whose contribution towards the Modern India has been immense. Though, there are many personalities who contributed even having a name in the text. The book provides the thought of different personalities on challenges of Modern India and how these can be taken up.
The development of democratic values, principles of Equality, Elimination of Social Evils etc. have been main issues attracted the attention of the Makers of Modern India.

Its a masterpiece written in non-partisan way and essential for one who want to understand individual personalities in isolation as well as in cooperation. The best thing about this book is it deals with almost every nationalist without pre-conceived mind and throws light on socio-political depth of there time. It deals with thoughts of MG,Jinna,Jyotiba Phule,Dr Ambedkar,RajaJi,Roy etc in great details.
