  • Description

Marathon Baba, written by Girish Kohli, is a funny, irreverent novel that touches on most aspects of modern society.

    Summary Of The Book

The plot centers around Karna, who finds everyday life hard to deal with. So, he runs. He runs to understand life, he runs away from life, he runs and keeps on running. Karna runs for seven long years through the country. At one point, he suddenly turns red, for no apparent reason. He then decides to set up an Ashram, and calls it the Marathon Ashram. The novel relates Karna’s story from his young days, living with his quarrelling parents in a fictional city. Later in life, he is dumped by his girlfriend. He also finds his IT job unbearable.

So, at the age of 23, he runs away from his life, leaving everything behind. He runs through several fictional cities, keeping himself alive by eating at temples and other places of worship. On his journey, he makes an acquaintance with a rock-star dope peddler name Bawa. On being released from jail, Bawa changes his name to Java and joins Karna. Karna, after turning inexplicably red, is now setting up an Ashram.

The Marathon Ashram promises to give refuge to people who are runaways. It attracts several disciples like the beautiful Karishma, whom Karna calls Ma. Another disciple is a superstar who turns the spotlight on the Ashram and Karna is soon referred to as Marathon Baba. A pair of shoes that Karna found during his legendary run play an important role in the story.

Witty, irreverent and wacky, Marathon Baba is fast paced and focuses on the absurdities of life.

Must Read - Totally radical and fresh

This is such a great book. It grabs you from the very first line. I was enthralled by the pace, the wit, the humor and the philosophy all weaved together that made it such a fascinating read. The character write ups are so cool. The author has invented a totally new style of writing so radical from anything you have read before. If I have to slot it its a combination of Cowboy meets Tarantino meets the Dalai Lama. Seems impossible right ? But Girish Kohli has certainly managed that. Unputdown...

A whiff of freshness and dark humour

One of the few good(really good) novels from a new breed of Indian writers that I've come to like. The entire story has a cryptic dark feel to it and the way the author objectifies the surroundings is really good.

Note : You won't ever regret picking up this novel.
@Author : Keep up the good work Girish !!

    Action meets wisdom!

Adrenaline on print would almost do justice to describe the gripping narrative that Marathon Baba is. The book is sprinkled with unusual similes that give the language a unique flavour while the writing style makes it easy to connect. The characters are well etched and the way Girish Kohli has connected different plots has to be read to be believed. One book after a long time that really blew me away!
Kudos sir, for your effort; waiting to read more from you.

Marathon Baba makes you feel like you’ve run a 42km marathon while reading a book. The writer creates a realm in this intriguing tale that captures the reader’s complete attention.

REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT and that too from an Indian Author

Kudos to Girish the author.....he is not afraid to experiment and has come up with something that is refereshing and entertaining and meaningful. This is the story for youth, the next generation and i hope he comes up with something similar but more polished and more vivid and he will be right up there with some of the best writers in the business. The response has been lukewarm to this book but very good start for a debutante.
This is the story of a guy whose personal life is tormented due t...
