    Description
A hydelpower project in the remote Himalayas. Three people brought together by fate. Nanda, an engineer from Kerala at the dam construction site hiding from his past, from the law, torn between the love of his dear ones and the traditional kalari code of revenge. Khusru, a boy displaced from his native village in Kashmir, a gambit in the terror plot threatening to blow up the dam, working as a labourer at the site. Rekha, a Kathak dancer in heart, a doctor by profession, arrives at the campsite as the consort of Khusru. A village that accepts the dictates of modernity with a heavy heart, its population steeped in superstitions and religious beliefs.

All throng the campsite like moths to a flame, some escape untouched, successful, some, miss a step, and perish. Each has a story to tell and a dream to realise. Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar is about the aspirations of these people with their cares and worries woven into the site life. The fury of nature and the hardships of project life have no mercy for the weak and no time for the dead. Like an eternal spectator the Dhauladhar watches as men risk life and limb in a quest to fulfill their dreams.

    Beautiful Hills Beautiful narrative

Enjoyed reading the book. The author has managed to beautifully dam together the life of three strangers who come to a dam project in the Dhauladhars.
Going through its pages would transfer me to those virgin hills away from the heat wave of Delhi.

    Worth the money

If you are looking for a story with detailed portrayal of characters, the backgrounds, surroundings and are curious to read how they are inter-wined together by fate or simply in a story. Then this is it. Being an Indian who possibly loves reading the likes of Khaled Hosseini are surely going to enjoy this book. The narrative is marvelous in every aspect and I especially loved how the author has written about the thoughts of each character. This to me helped understand each person a lot bette...

    3.5 stars

This is a novel of substance with a well researched and riveting storyline. All the characters are given a strong background story which makes it all the more engrossing. At one point I felt that there are way too many characters to fit into a single storyline but the author seemed to have made that work by the climax of the book. The different storylines which seemed to be going at a different tangent at one point of time beautifully cohere by the end and a compelling story is weaved by the ...

Captivating, the climax could have been better

The book turned out unexpectedly good. The storyline is almost smooth, the past and present well handled. There were so many characters, each with their own stories, it seemed like the making of a series. The climax is too rushed.
I recommend giving the book a try.

    Mind-boggling and Astonishing

The heart of this book is Dhauladhar peaks. The peak stands tall and serene in northwest of India starting from Himachal Pradesh to Kashmir watching over the people of Dhaudlahar range foot hill villages. The tranquility in the milieu of this place gives a picturesque sight until the government decided to start a hydro electric project in the remote Himalayas. The nature conspired against three people and brings them together.

Nandakumar fondly called Nanda came from the lands of Maithathil ...

    A well researched book

I was provided with a copy of the book by the author for an honest review, however, the review is completely based on my opinions and not biased or paid for.

One of the best books I have read by an Indian author, a well researched and beautifully put together, it is a treat to read about India.

The novel is set in the contemporary India and weaving stories of very colorful characters with amazing back stories going back to almost 100 years from now with their ancestry and in the process s...

    Met Expectations

Thanks to the author to send me copy for review. It is a decent debut by Mr. Shibu.

The book is mainly about three people and their travails. The author has created the characters beautifully complete with a detailed past.

Nanda, an engineer by profession and kalari exponent, is running away from his past and comes to Dhauladhar to work at a hydro project.

Khusru, a terrorist joins the site with a motive to blow the dam apart.

Rekha is a doctor-dancer who comes along with Khusru as his c...

    complicated yet interesting read

'Men and Dreams in the Dhauladhar’ is a debut novella penned down by Kochery Shibu. It elicits the author’s experience at a Hydroelectricity project in a subtle way. The story is complicated, yet different from what is generally offered on the reading platter these days. Dreams and aspirations are what this story speaks about and the author has done a commendable job in bringing out the essence of the title of the book.

Nanda, Khusru, and Rekha- the three protagonists get a chance to come to...

    OK

First of all, thanks to the author for sending me this book for free.
Fiction doesn't appeal to me much,so I may be one of the harshest critics.
Basically its a story about construction of a dam and various characters involved.
After reading a few pages,it becomes evident that its a debut novel. There are a few inconsistencies in writing like excessive use of italics, pronouns are not used and some characters are not introduced properly.Half of the book's pages are introducing character after ch...
